I hugged him before the first tear fell.

Though I’d only spent a short time in the military before I was injured, aside from Levi, no one had ever told me how proud they were of me to have done what I had.

Sure, it was terrifying, but I needed a life better than what my parents had planned for me. And stepping out on my own had been one of the hardest things to do.

I thought once they saw that I was good at something, they would have changed their minds.

I was almost thirty now.

They didn’t care.

“Aww, Goddess, don’t cry.” He rubbed my back then held me tighter.

When I finally was okay again, he handed me his drink. Smiling, I allowed myself a couple of sips before giving it back to him.

“Goddess, I don’t want to put any pressure on you.” He reassured me. “But I know what it feels like to have the wrong woman in my life. You see that, right?”

I nodded.

“Do you think Dillon would want me?” I asked.

“Are you kidding?” Carter laughed. “He’s so head-over-heels for you, he has no idea what to do with himself. Trust me, all you have to worry about is letting yourself fall in love with me.”

“What about you loving me?”

“My heart is playing hard to get right now.” Carter shrugged. “But we both know it won’t be much longer.”

I laughed.

“Remember what you said about when this is over.” I asked.

Carter nodded.

“I wasn’t avoiding you because I didn’t want to.” I admitted. “But could you give me a few days to um—well, fix myself up?”

“Fix yourself up?”

“You know?” I twisted my wrist at him in frustration. “There are certain things a woman needs to do to herself in preparation for her man.”

“Her man?” Carter sat on the floor, looking up at me. “Before I assume—are you saying that I’m your man?”

I opened my mouth to deny it—but straightened my spine instead.

“Yes. That’s what I’m saying.”

He laughed softly, a beautiful sound that I enjoyed.

I smacked his shoulder.

“So—what are some of these things you need to do in order to prepare yourself for me?”

“I can’t tell you.” I pouted.

“You drive a hard bargain.”

Carter stood, took my hand and led me back around the center table and fell backward into the sofa. He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me into his lap. There, I framed his cheeks and kissed him deeply, enjoying his hardness under me.

“Just a couple of days, you say?” Carter sighed against my lips.
