“Don’t say things like that.” I sighed. “Men don’t want to be claimed.”

“Those idiots don’t speak for me.” He replied. “Do you know how sexy it is to walk into a room and have my woman introduce me asmy man?”

“You know I’m not perfect, right?”

“That’s okay.” He shrugged. “Neither am I.”

For a moment, I thought about it before picking up my helmet and stepped forward.

“Follow me to park then if you want, you can come up.”

“I want.”

Even as I rolled to a stop to show him where to park, then leaving him to slide my cycle into my spot beside my truck, I couldn’t stop wondering if I was doing the right thing.

This decision could affect so many people and I didn’t want Dillon to go through anymore hardships. But I was determined to be a good force in his life. I wanted to show him the love Audrey never gave him and all those moments with a mother all the other teenagers took for granted, I wanted to give him.

One disaster after another.

After showing him where to park, I set my cycle next to my truck and went back to escort him into my unit. The ride up the elevator was tense as I wasn’t sure what to do. The way he stared at me the entire way up set me back a bunch of years—to my first time.

Only, this time I wasn’t scared.

No, with Carter I was excited—I was submissive.

Exhaling loudly, I led him down the hall, him walking behind me with his hands jammed into his black pants pockets. His footsteps were quiet behind me and his eyes burning a trail down my back, over my ass and stayed there.

For him, I swayed my hips a little more, wishing I’d thought to put something a little sexier on.

Inside my unit, I let him in.

I was sure it wasn’t what he was used to—it was smaller, didn’t have a spectacular view.

“Do you want something to drink?” I set my helmet on the counter and opened the fridge. “I have soda, coconut water or I can start the coffeemaker—”

“Soda is fine.” He replied.

When I added some ice into a glass and brought it and the soda to him, he accepted both and sat.

“Your friendship with Levi—it’s been a while.”

I nodded and sat across from him.

“Mm.” I answered. “He’s the only family I have left, so—yeah.”

“If you don’t mind me asking—what happened to your family.?

He poured the soda on the ice then set the drink on the center table and leaned back in the sofa.

“When I joined the military, they disowned me.” I replied. “I wasn’t the feminine daughter they thought they would have. My aspirations of being more than a man’s wife were too lofty and brought shame to the family.”

“Being a part of the military is a time honoured thing.” Carter leaned toward me. “It’s something every family should be proud of. You chose a higher purpose for your life. I don’t understand what—”

He exhaled, walked around the table and slipped to his knees in front of me.

I watched as he lifted my hands to kiss the back of them, before looking into my eyes.

“It may not mean much, Goddess.” His voice was soft, comforting, like a warm hug on a very cold day. “But what you’ve done for this country is something I respect. You’re a stronger human that I’ll ever be because you sacrificed for something bigger than yourself. Then you come home and took on the job of protecting me and my son and—I’m very proud of you.”
