Her question was valid since the only time he came down here in the middle of the night was when he was wound up and couldn’t sleep.

“Yeah, sure. Did I wake you?”

“No. I mean I heard you in the shower, then I must’ve dozed off and when I woke up and you weren’t in bed, I got worried.”

Yup, that was his girl. Always worrying about him.

“You should be in bed, not down here looking after me.”

“And you should be in bed with me.” She put her hands on her now ample hips. He loved it when she got all bossy and shit. It was so out of character it was funny.

“Yes, ma’am.” He saluted all stiff and military and she laughed.

“C’mon.” She pointed to the stairs and he followed her up.

“Fuckin’ love walking behind you. Still got the sweetest ass. First thing I noticed that time we went skinny dipping off my boat.”

He’d won a boat in lieu of money when a guy couldn’t pay up and it was one of the first dates him and Mandy went on. Even then he knew she was different than the other women. No agenda, no fake bullshit, just real and genuine.

When they got to the top of the stairs, she leaned into him. “You know I can’t sleep when you’re not in bed with me.”

“I need another shower, then I’ll be right there next to you.”

She situated herself in bed. Not easy with all the extra weight she was carrying.

He made the shower quick, then slipped in next to her on the mattress spooning her curvy body to his. He inhaled the fresh scent of her hair and his back stiffened as a vision of those young girls flashed through his brain.

Mandy turned her head to look at him over her shoulder. “Are you all right?”

“Yeah.” It was the second time she asked him the same question in the last fifteen minutes. His girl was way too perceptive and he knew he better work harder at hiding his emotions until he got this shit sorted. The last thing he wanted was her knowing or being anywhere near this fuck up.

He threaded his fingers through her long, silky hair. “Cobra said people go on a baby moon before the baby’s born.”

“I know, but with our schedules and all the money we’ve spent on the house I thought—”

“He said he’d lend us his house up at Mount Charleston for an overnight or a few days. Whatever we want.”

“Really?” She slowly turned until she was facing him. “Would you like to do that?”

“Hell, yeah. I think it would be good and give you a chance to relax a little.”

Get out of Vegas, off the radar, give him time to figure out his next move because there was no way he was dancing to Marita’s tune. He wasn’t one of her lackeys, and fuck her if she thought he would lie down for her.

He’d come up against way tougher than her, but then the only life on the line was his, and in those days, he didn’t give a shit if he lived or died. Now, he had too much to lose and that bitch Marita knew it, but fuck her if she thought he’d let her jump in and snatch away his life.

“Mamba? Did you hear me?

“Nah, I drifted for a minute.”Keep your head in the game, asshole.

“I said, we better do it this weekend because I may not have much longer.” She twisted her lips into a teasing smirk. “And I think the idea is to do this without the baby.”

“That’s the idea, smartass.” He palmed her ass and squeezed, then laughed when she yelped. “I’ll tell Cobra tomorrow and you set it up with Mitzi at the salon.”

“Except for those weekends we spent when you were fighting in Searchlight, we’ve never been away together.”

“I’ll take care of everything all you have to do is throw some clothes in a bag. Or not, cause I love looking at you naked.”

“Even now?”
