“I’m just happy I can do this for him, and take some of the burden off your mother.”

“You’ve made my mother very happy.”

She and her mother had forgiven Mamba, but he still carried the guilt.

“If I keep pulling in these big winnings, she may not have to work at all.”

“Mama’s proud; it was hard enough to get her to move in here.”

Mamba eased his arms around Mandy tighter for a hug. “Stubborn like her daughter.”

Mamba gave her one more kiss, then filled his mug with steaming coffee.

“Why don’t we sit outside before it gets too hot?” This last month the Vegas heat was hitting her hard.

“I gotta go see Samson.”

“On a Sunday?” So much for her day relaxing with her man.

“I’ll be back in an hour or so.”

Mamba’s boots echoed through the vacuous space of Club Wicked. Samson and Nick took the club to the next level. They brought in heavy hitters from New York and Cali, and the place became a huge moneymaker.

He rode the mirrored elevator to the third-floor offices. Exiting the elevator, he continued down the hall to Samson’s office. He knocked once and entered.

Samson looked out of place behind the chrome and glass desk. His overall bulk and rough exterior fit better with throwing fists in a cage, which was what he did for a good portion of his life in New York. Like Mamba, he grew up fighting. First for his life and then for money. He’d struggled with addiction but was able to put it on the back burner, also like Mamba.

“I’m guessing when my head of security comes in on a Sunday afternoon there’s a problem.”

“Some things I couldn’t get into last night.”

“And now you’re stalling instead of spitting shit out like you usually do.”

Mamba sucked in a deep breath. “We’ve been in the new house almost a year and for the first few months I was handling everything fine.” Mamba drew his palm over his shaved head. “Then the bills got ahead of me.”

“And you went to the wrong people for a loan.”

“Mandy fell in love with the place, and I couldn’t resist putting a smile on her face after all the shit we’d been through.”

“I get wanting to make your woman happy, but knowing Mandy, I can’t believe she’d even care about all that stuff. I think if you leveled with her, she’d understand.”

“Sure she would; she never asks for anything. Fuck, she’d live in a shack in the desert if I said that’s all we could afford, but it’s all the more reason I wanna give her the best.”

“Even if it means getting your legs broke?”

“She’s got the new business and she needs whatever money she makes to put back into the shop. I want her to succeed, but there’s a lot of extras with the house, shit I didn’t see coming, and now—I don’t wanna disappoint her. I wanna do it for her, for her mom, and brother.”

“You’re still carrying that guilt, huh?”

“Maybe, but it’s more than that.”

“Either way, going to those guys for help is a piss poor idea.”

“You made that clear last night.”

“What about the money you make here?”
