The more I learned about her pack and how they treated her, the more I hated them. The Bransom Country pack had been our enemies for a long time, and I had always wondered why. But to hear what kind of people they were now, how they treated their own kind, their own blood, maybe hating them was the right thing. I never thought that was possible, that hate was the right thing to do, but now I did. I had seen enough to know that hate was justified sometimes.

“Why are you looking like that?”

I shook my head, clearing away some of those sad thoughts. “Every time you talk about them and how they treated you, it’s just hard to understand.”

“You probably think about it more than I do. They’re no longer able to make my life better or worse, so they don’t matter. I don’t know if I will ever be able to repay you, Calvin. If you wouldn’t have stopped and talked to me at Dottie’s, I don’t know where I’d be right now.”

“You would have figured something out, Eliza. You are far more capable than you give yourself credit for.”

She could barely meet my gaze after I said that. It was like she didn’t know how to take compliments very well. She likely hadn’t had very many before based on how she talked about her home life.

“What’s wrong?”

“When you say stuff like that, it makes me think I might not be the trash I was led to believe I was. I’ve thought that for a long time, so it’s hard to change that.”

I hated to see her so upset. “Do you want to take that run now?” I asked, hoping to get her out of her current mind space.

She nodded, and by the expression on her face, it was exactly what Eliza needed. She needed open spaces and somewhere to run.

Eliza shifted into her true form, a sleek grey wolf that was small, but as I learned quickly, fast. I watched in awe for a moment, then did my best to keep up. It wasn’t as easy as I thought.

Eliza wasn’t only fast, she could climb as well. Seeing her go up the side of a mountain was something else altogether. I had never seen a shifter or anyone be able to go so high and fast, but Eliza was a wonder.

At one point, she was so high up, there was no way I would be able to follow. I tried to get to her a couple of times, but I was having a hard time with the steepness of the ridge. It was easy for her to go up and down almost sheer rock walls, but impossible for me. I just looked up at her and shook my head after a few failed tries. I was impressed.

Once she got down, we ran for a while longer, each taking the lead for a time, both of us completely out of breath when we came to a clearing that was full of wildflowers. It was the perfect place to sit down and catch our breath. We were both laid down on our backs next to each other, neither one of us saying anything for a while.

“You are amazing, Eliza; I hope you know that.” The more I knew about Eliza, the more convinced I was that the leader of my enemies really was an idiot.

I wanted to know every last thing about her. I wanted to touch her, taste her, memorize every single crease of her face, make her mine inallways.

The last thought made me swallow hard. I’ll admit that I’d thought about using her for leverage if need be with the Bransom Country pack, but now I saw that Eliza could be so much more than that to me. She already was, but I hoped she would be more.

“I guess we should get back,” I said after a few minutes.

Eliza moved up to her elbow and looked down at me. “Do we really have to go? I thought we got everything done.”

“We got everything done, but it’s going to be late soon.”

“My people can see perfectly in the dark. Can’t yours?”

I had never heard that before, and wondered if Sterling knew that tidbit of information.

“How well can you see in the dark?”

“It’s just like daytime.”

“You really are amazing, Eliza. I want to kiss you so badly, it’s killing me.”

“Why don’t you just do it, then?”

I shrugged. “I want to make sure you want me to. I don’t want you to think that you have to because I brought you here or anything…”

Eliza stopped me, putting her finger to my lips. “Yes, I want you to kiss me, Calvin.”

I moved in close and pressed my lips to hers. She kissed me back with the same passion. There was something calling me to do more. Her body was quickly undern mine, wiggling and writhing around, making me go insane. I was so turned on in, and when I pressed against her, she jerked up and took notice. Eliza was taking every touch I could give her and begging for more.

Eliza panted when I kissed down her neck. She held her breath as I moved my hands to her hips and whimpered at the pressure against her core. She seemed to have little to no experience, and that only made her more enticing. I wanted to show her what it could feel like between us. I knew it was going to be wonderful, but I didn’t want to get carried away. I wanted this to be right, because I had a feeling that we were going to remember this for a long time to come. This wouldn’t be our only time, but I also didn’t want our first time to be here in the woods.
