“That’s okay.” I patted his arm. “Alcor, I understand that cooking with Arabella is the last thing you remember, but in reality, that happened long ago. Your body has been through something traumatic and needs rest. Please try to relax, and I’m sure your memories will be back in no time.”

He looked up at me, searching for something in my eyes, before nodding. “Please. Please help her,” he said. “She’s whimpering.”

I looked up at Charlie and Zaide, who were staring at me. I wanted to talk to them. I needed advice. Speaking out loud would upset Alcor and ruin the calm facade I was presenting. Leaving the room would make him more stressed. But using our bond to speak would mean I could only speak to one of them.

Unless I could make them hear me and each other …

I concentrated on our bonds and imagined wrapping and tying the gold and shining lines between my soul pair and my familiar. Testing my theory, I thought,“What do I do? I don’t want to cause her any brain issues like Alcor.”

Zaide responded first.“Heal her. I do not believe our healing is impacting the mind, only that we cannot reach it.”

Charlie’s eyebrows reached his hairline as heard Zaide’s voice. But after a few blinks, he replied too,“You said her threads were looking bad, so she’s better off healing in body even if she loses her memory.”

“But that will not happen,”Zaide added.

I took a deep breath and began slowly pushing power into Arabella’s threads, turning them green within a matter of seconds. Suddenly tired, I took a seat on the edge of her bed as she moaned.

“Arabella?” Alcor whispered, his face scrunched with such concern and hope that it hurt my heart.

He’s going to be devastated when he remembers she betrayed him.

Her eyelids fluttered, and she mumbled, “Isaac?”

Alcor reared back. “Who is Isaac?”

“That’s him over there.” Charlie pointed at the bed in the far corner of the room, where Isaac slept facing the wall.

Alcor glared at the bed. “He was also in the accident?”

“Yes.”

“Isaac?” Arabella asked again more clearly and opened her eyes to focus on me. “Who are you?”

“I’m Clawdia,” I replied.

Please, let her remember.

She sat up looking around, the confusion in her eyes cleared. “You are the soul pair we were going to save.” I nodded. “What happened?”

“You had an accident.”

She nodded, “But after. Did you see Rose? Is she okay?”

I swallowed and looked down. “I’m so sorry. She died.”

Alcor couldn’t keep quiet any longer and crawled onto her bed. “Arabella, my darkling. I was so worried. Are you truly healed?”

“Alcor!” She jumped back, giving me a wide-eyed look, and Alcor frowned. “I’m—I’m fine.”

“What’s wrong, Darkling?” he asked and gently cupped her face. “Are you hurting?”

“He’s forgotten what happened,” I whispered.

Her mouth fell open, and she blinked a few times. Then it snapped shut, and she caressed the hand holding his face. “I’m glad to see you’re okay.”

“What is going on?”Charlie asked.

“I’m not sure.”
