Trevor laughs, “It’s Moscato. A type of wine. It’s disgustingly sweet but Mia likes it.”

After drinking about half the glass, I feel relaxed. I tuck my feet underneath me and ask, “How do you all know each other?”

Max and Hunter share a glance like they are having a silent conversation.

Hunter says, “We work together.”

I glance at him, “What do you do?”

Mia tilts her head and grins, “We kill people. Assassins. Killers.”

I swallow hard.

“All of you?”

Willow laughs, “Not me. I’m just a mom.”

They are all talking back and forth but I don’t hear a word said. My thoughts are colliding with each other, one louder than the others. My first love, my Hunter is a murderer and so are his friends. I rise from the chair on shaky legs, “Excuse me.”

“Goddamn it, Mia!” Hunter yells.

I’m trapped here with a killer. There’s nowhere to go. So, I flee to the safety of my room. How safe am I really? So far, he hasn’t forced himself in the room if I lock the door. But when will that end? Since his father took me, I have always known I would likely live a short life. Somehow, this is worse. Knowing the boy I loved might be the one to end my existence after giving me a glimmer of hope, is a bitter pill to swallow.

My pacing back and forth is interrupted by a knock at the door.

“Who’s there?”

“Willow. Can I come in?”

“Are you alone?”

“Yes, honey. It’s just me.”

I unlock the door and open it, and she walks in, I lock it behind her.

She takes a seat on the end of the bed, “You’re spiraling.”

I nod, “I’m spiraling.”

Willow sits there calmly, her hands on her lap, while I pace back and forth like a caged animal.

“Did he trick you?”

She glances at me with confusion, “Who?”

“Max. Did he trick you into marrying him? I’m assuming you didn’t know he was a killer.”

Willow chuckles, “Yeah, that would make sense but no he didn’t trick me. Let me tell you something. For the past year or so they’ve hunted men that do horrible things to women like us. If they weren’t looking for Mia, they may never have found you.”

This is a lot to take in. I stop pacing and think. The night they found me, Hunter held onto me, but the rest of them went into a house. When they returned, she was with them. I was out of it and didn’t ask questions.

“Somebody took her?”

She nods, “Trevor’s brother took her, but his father was involved. It’s a long story and it doesn’t matter now. But these men are protective of their women. Hunter will never hurt you. If anyone even thinks about hurting you, yes, they are dead. It’s not negotiable.”

Gulping down what remains of my wine, I place the empty glass on the dresser.

I fold my arms across my chest, “Well, Hunter’s father hurt me but he’s not going to kill his own flesh and blood. That’s ridiculous.”
