She smiles softly, “Yes, he will. His father is not a good man. He took you from Hunter in the worst way possible. He will pay for that. But it’s not only about you. Yes, part of it is revenge for what he did to you. But they will need to make sure he can’t hurt other women.”

“What about my dad?”

She shrugs, “I don’t know everything, especially since Max has retired.”

“I didn’t know he retired.”

“We have a family now. He’s still involved mainly as a consultant.”

“And Mia?”

She laughs, “Yeah, she’s crazy. Max trained her and she’s a force. When Trevor’s brother kidnapped her, she killed him and the other man that really wanted to hurt her. She had no weapons on her. A lot of people look at her tiny body and think she’ll be easy to take. That’s what makes Mia more lethal than the guys. She gets underestimated frequently. That’s a mistake.”

“I’ve known Hunter since kindergarten. I can’t believe he kills for a living.”

“Look at me.”

I do, and she smiles a small smile that radiates warmth, “I had a hard time when I found out too. Max killed my dad, who had abused me for most of my life. This is what helped me. Don’t think of it like they are assassins. Ever since Max found out I was locked in a convent enduring assault after assault, their business changed. Mia specifically works tirelessly to end trafficking. The guys have followed suit. They are protectors first, and killers second. These are not innocent people they’re killing. These men are the worst of the worst. You have no say in it. If someone hurts you, they die. It’s that simple. There’s no use fighting it because it won’t change.”

I nod, “It’s a lot to unpack.”

“It is. Look, Hunter loves you. I know you’re not in the same place right now and that’s fine. He will protect you. Hunter will never hurt you.

Running my hand through my hair, I smile, “Thank you.”

Rising off the bed, she asks, “Will you come back down with me? He’s probably losing his mind right now.”

I take a deep breath, “Yes. Let’s go.”

We walk down the stairs, and I feel the heat of his gaze from across the room.

I give into what I know he wants and sit beside him.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m good.”

CHAPTER NINE

HUNTER

When she sits beside me, the relief courses through me. I lean forward and kiss her on the head, and she doesn’t flinch. I place my arm around her, and she sinks into me.

Max clears his throat, “It’s time for us to go. I’ll text you, Hunter. We need a planning session to figure this shit out.”

I nod, “Okay. Thanks for your help.”

They get up and head to the door. Trevor says, “We’ll see ourselves out.”

I nod, “I’ll call you, Max.”

Jade turns toward me and gazes at me. Something is different but I can’t figure out what it is.

She darts her tongue out and licks her lips and all I can do is stare at her mouth. Fuck it’s perfect like her. Jade was gifted with plump lips, so kissable. But I don’t dare, as much as I want to.

“Hunter,” she whispers.

The way she’s looking at me right now causes most of the air to escape from my lungs but somehow, I manage, “Yes, Sassy?”
