Even the most skilled assassin wouldn't have predicted what would happen next.

She jumps up, the blanket hits the ground, and she grabs my gun from my holster. I raise my hands in the air thinking she’s going to kill me. Instead, she points the gun to her head.

I watch her finger move to the trigger but she’s trembling so much, I’m not sure she’ll be able to pull it.

“Jade. You can go wherever you want. What’s happening right now?”

“I am ready to die. I’ve been ready to die sincethat night.I will never go back to him unless it’s in a body bag.”

Slowly, I stand, keeping my hands in the air, “If you don’t want to go back, you don’t have to. Whatever you want.”

My father is a dick. I’ve known that all my life. This reaction is more than that. I step forward and take the gun from her hand.

“Did he hurt you?”

She nods.

“What did he do?”

She picks the blanket up from the floor and wraps herself in it, “He raped and beat me daily. Until he sold me to Trig.”

Dropping to her knees, she looks at me with glassy eyes, “Please, Hunter. If you ever cared about me, end this. End my life. I don’t want to live anymore. I can’t.”

I fall to the floor in front of her and wrap my arms around her, “I have never stopped caring about you. I will kill every man that ever hurt you, including my own father. This is not the end, baby girl. It’s the beginning. We will figure everything out. I promise you, you’re safe with me. No one will lay a hand on you without your consent, ever again.”

She sobs in my arms, “I thought you’d figure out I didn’t marry your father by choice. I was sure you’d know I was in danger. Then you never came back. You disappeared.”

I was so lost in my pain, I ignored what was right in front of me. How the fuck am I ever going to repair the damage I’ve done? How am I going to fix her? If I learned anything from this line of work, it’s that this kind of suffering can’t be undone. Her pain is my doing. How could I just walk away? I let her go once, and it nearly destroyed us both. I won't do it again, no matter what the cost. Jade doesn't know it, but she's mine.

She's not dangerous like Mia. I'm not sure she could end a life if she were paid to. For me, she's the most dangerous person on earth. Jade Sinclair is my kryptonite. She makes me weak. With one look, I knew what I tried to hide from myself. I've never stopped loving her. I never will. Letting her go will never be an option. I will keep her even if it kills us both.

CHAPTER THREE

HUNTER

Ten Years Ago…

I was never close to my father. I knew from the time I was a small child he was a bad man, although I didn’t know he was pure evil. At eighteen, I wasn’t an idiot. I saw the way he looked at her. Still, I was sure it was a line even he wouldn’t cross. How wrong I was.

Walking into the house after a basketball game with some friends, I freeze on the spot, when I notice Jade with my father’s arm around her, sitting on the bench at the kitchen table. Why is she here? Without me? And why does he have his hands on my girl? My fucking everything.

“Oh good,” he says, “We can get the dramatic shit over with.”

Glancing over at Jade, I clench my fists as her eyes lock onto the floor. She won’t even look at me.

“She’s mine now, son.”

“What?”

He chuckles and grips her tighter, “She’s mine. Jade has agreed to marry me.”

What the fuck is this bullshit?

“No. Not happening.”

Through gritted teeth, he squeezes her even harder, “Sweetheart, tell him.”

Still unable to look at me, Jade says, “It’s true.”
