“Jade, look at me.”

She glances at me with tears in her eyes, “I’m sorry, Hunter. I never wanted to hurt you.”

Hurt? That’s not the word for what this is. It’s excruciating. Like someone reached inside my chest and ripped my fucking heart out.

Everybody says those we fall for when we’re young are not our forever. It’s a learning experience. Puppy love. For me, Jade was so much more than that. She was my first love. My best friend. My fucking future. Until she wasn’t. Until she was his.

“This is what you want? After everything?”

Her gaze drops back to the floor as she nods.

“Fucking cunt,” I say to her, although, I really want to wrap my hands around her throat.

“You watch your mouth, son. You’ll speak to your stepmother with respect.”

My girlfriend, I guess my ex-girlfriend, is going to be my stepmother. Nope. This is too much. I can handle a lot of shit in life, I have, but not this.

I pick up my bag from the floor and she glances at me, “I’m sorry,” she says with tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Not half as fucking sorry as I am. I wasted three years of my life on you. Three fucking years I will never get back. You’re disgusting, Jade. I hope I never lay eyes on you again.”

A sob escapes from her chest as I turn to walk back through the door and never return.

Slamming the door behind me, I know there’s only one person I can turn to. I need somewhere to sleep. I have over a million dollars in a bank account that I can now take money from. It was held in trust until my eighteenth birthday. While it was my mother’s doing, it was money she left me before she died a painful death from cancer, I know it came from my father. I don’t want anything to do with him. I don’t want his money.

Walking to Max’s house takes me almost an hour. I could’ve taken my car, but my father pays for it, so I decided I’d rather get there on my now aching feet.

My chest burns with every step I take in the cold, blustery air. It’s not from the exertion but the fact that I lost my girl, to my father. How did that even happen? I’m not saying I’m the best-looking guy on the planet. I don’t have to work for female attention. I get it without any effort. It always drove Jade nuts. I guess she doesn’t care anymore. She made her choice, as fucking stupid as it is.

Max has this fancy biometrics set up at his house, but my face isn’t in his security system, so I ring the doorbell like the commoner I am.

He opens the door, laughing with a drink in his hand, “Come on in, Hunter.”

I follow him through the entryway and into a large family room.

“Sit,” he says, “Hunter. Trevor. Trevor. Hunter.”

I nod, “Hi.”

Standing awkwardly with my hands stuffed in my pockets, I say, “I can go. I should’ve called first.”

Max raises an eyebrow and motions to the chair beside me, “You are here for a reason. Sit. We have a job in a few hours, but I have time.”

Lowering myself into the chair, I glance at his friend Trevor nervously. I’m not sure I want to talk about this with some strange dude sitting here.

“He’s cool,” Max says.

I nod and proceed to tell him about my father, herein known as dick, and my ex-girlfriend, now referred to as cunt.

Max blows out a breath, “That’s heavy shit. What do you need? How can I help?”

Swallowing down the lump in my throat, I glance away from him, “I need somewhere to stay. If it’s asking too much, I understand.”

Trevor stands and walks over to the bar and makes drinks. He hands Max one and then me, “Here. You look like you could use this.”

I take the glass from him, “Thanks,” and swallow down the amber liquid. It burns my throat and they both laugh when I cough.

“I know you have money. Why don’t you get your own place?”
