I smile even though she can’t see me behind the shower curtain, “Yes. He is.”

“He’s worried I’ll hurt you.”

I giggle loudly, “He’s worried everyone will hurt me.”

A knock sounds at the door, “The doctor and therapist are here to see her.”

“Okay,” I yell back.

After she finishes in the shower, I help her dry off and get dressed. Then I brush her hair gently getting all the knots out.

“We’re going to go. You need to talk to your doctors. If you need me, they can call me. I’ll be back tomorrow either way.”

She wraps her arms around me, “I missed you.”

“I missed you too, Mom. I love you.”

“Love you too,” she says as she sniffs.

Hunter and I go to walk out, but Max stops us. He stares at me with a soft expression, “She was never going to starve to death. Not on my watch. The doctor would’ve put a feeding tube in today had she not eaten.”

I smile, and wrap my arms around his waist, “Thank you, Max. You’re wonderful. I owe you everything.”

When I pull back, he looks a little taken aback, “You owe me nothing. I’m happy we found your mother.”

Hunter locks his fingers into mine as we walk back to the car, “When we get home, I want you to get ready, I’m taking my beautiful girl out tonight.”

I smirk at him, “What if I don’t want to go out?”

He opens my door for me, and I slide in as he answers, “You’re going regardless. If I have to get a collar and leash you’re going.”

I laugh hard as he walks around to the driver's side and gets in.

“I’m a dog now?”

He gazes at me and shakes his head as he puts the car into drive, “More like a sexy jungle cat.”

“Ever tried to collar a jungle cat, baby? I think you’d get scratched badly.”

Hunter groans, “I do love it when you scratch me, Sassy girl.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

HUNTER

I’m pacing in the living room while I wait for Jade. Nervous doesn’t even begin to describe what I’m currently experiencing. Tonight, I’m asking her to marry me the way she wants. I’m not worried she’ll say no. I’m completely sure she’ll say yes. What I’m worried about is disappointing her. She deserves for every dream of hers to come true. What if my plans are not good enough? When I spot her walking down the stairs all the oxygen leaves my lungs. Jesus. She’s stunning. Wearing a dark blue floor length dress with a plunging neckline, silver stilettos, diamond earrings with a matching diamond pendant necklace she’s a fucking vision.

“Jesus Christ, Sassy. So beautiful.”

She smiles sweetly, “I understood the assignment, sir.”

“Fuck. Yes, you did.”

I told her we were going somewhere fancy for dinner. That’s all the information she got from me.

Taking her hand, I kiss her knuckles as we walk out to the waiting vehicle.

“You aren’t driving?” she asks.
