“Not tonight.”

I open the back door to the Land Rover we’ll be riding in tonight and help her in before joining her on the other side. After helping her with her seatbelt, I put my arm around her, holding her close.

Kissing her on the cheek, I murmur, “You look absolutely stunning tonight, baby girl.”

She smiles as she gazes at me, “You look delicious in a suit, Mr. Hayden.”

After a short drive to the city, we arrive at our destination, ‘Hayden Hotel and Spa.’

She gazes out the window at the sign, “What the?”

I chuckle, “This is my hotel, baby girl. Well, ours.”

After I get out of the vehicle, I walk around to open her door and help her out. We walk to the elevator, my staff looks but they don’t say a word, they know better. I get out my card and swipe for roof access. Normally, you don’t need a key card to get to the roof but tonight you do because I don’t want anyone up here that isn’t supposed to be. The rooftop is the reason I bought this hotel. The view is breathtaking of the Pocono Mountains. More than once I came up here and imagined what it would be like to show it to Jade. I never expected it to become a reality. Tonight, it is.

When we walk out of the elevator and step onto the roof Jade gasps, her gaze wild and shocked. I smile inside, my staff followed my instructions to a ‘T’. There’s a small table set up for us with wine glasses sitting on top. They are filled with water since my pregnant girl can’t drink. Rose petals are scattered on the table as well as our place settings, hurricane candles are on the top of the wall overlooking the mountains. Jade walks over and looks out, “Hunter. This is breathtaking.”

“Like you, Sassy. Absolutely fucking breathtaking.”

Jade

He did this for me? This might be the most beautiful spot I’ve ever stood in. Hunter takes my hand, “Dance with me, Sassy girl.”

I remember those exact words in my driveway so many years ago when I missed prom because Craig wouldn’t let him go. I was heartbroken as any teenage girl would be. The next night Hunter showed up in my driveway and danced with me. It wasn’t the same. It was better.

I nod, “Yes.”

He pulls a remote from his pocket and presses play on the sound system. AlwaysRemember Us This Way, byLady Gagaplays. I had never heard of her before the night at the carnival, but I instantly fell in love with the song.

Placing the remote back in his pocket he pulls me up against his hard chest, I wrap my arms around his neck, as he places his around my waist, “This song is perfect because this is how I always want us to be,” he says.

When the song ends, he steps back from me, his chest moving rapidly with his quickening breaths, “What’s wrong?”

“I wanted to wait. But I don’t think I can.”

Now it’s my heart that’s racing. What’s going on? Why the serious expression?

He takes a deep breath before speaking, “When I unchained you in that basement, I also unchained myself. I was half a man without you. Barely surviving. I was a shell walking through life, taking lives was my only worth. I didn’t date. I couldn’t. How could I give anyone my heart when you owned it? You have possessed my heart since that very first day on the slide. I didn’t know it then, but I do now. Your soul matches mine. If you die, I die. A world without you isn’t one worth living in. You have been mine nearly all my life. Evil couldn’t change that. You can’t change fate. You and I, Sassy girl that’s exactly what we are. How else do you explain this outcome? You’ve always been mine. I’m asking you…”

He drops to bended knee, “I’m asking you to make it legal. We never have to get married for you to be mine. You always have been, always will be. But I want you to be mine in every single way. I need you to be my wife. Please, Sassy, will you marry me?”

The tears fall down my cheeks, “Yes, Hunter. Yes.”

“Shit. I forgot the ring. I knew I’d fuck this up.”

He looks deflated as he feels around in his pocket. I drop to my knees in front of him, “This is perfect, Hunter. You didn’t fuck anything up. I don’t even need a ring.”

Pulling a black velvet box from his pocket, he opens it, and I gasp, “Yes you do need a ring. The most beautiful woman in the world needs a ring so all these fuckers know she’s mine.”

I giggle as he slides the biggest ring I’ve seen on my finger. Staring at it, it takes my breath away, a solitaire diamond. I don’t even know how big it is, but it’s huge.

He takes his thumb and finger and places it on my chin, and tilts my head up, “I have another surprise for you.”

Hunter pulls a stack of papers from his inside suit pocket and hands them to me.

“What’s this?”

He clears his throat, “Divorce papers, Sassy. Divorce papers for a marriage that never should’ve happened.”
