Liam sure had her fooled. “I don't think that's in the cards.”

“I see how he looks at you,” Felicia told me. “That man is over-the-top in love with you, lady.”

She sounded like Vivienne. Liam and I had put on an act for these people, and it seemed to have worked——at least it had been an act before.

Nikki stopped her kneading and prodding and started placing warm, black stones on my back.

This was my first ever hot stone treatment. The heat soothed my sore muscles as it soaked in——my reward for tolerating Nikki’s attempt to tenderize me.

Felicia’s eyes were closed, a smile on her face. Could she be seeing something I was missing with Liam?

The warmth growing in my chest was no longer a result of the stones. Could I dare to hope that Felicia was right about how serious he was?

Liam

After our shooting,we stopped for lunch at a small seafood place on the way back. We both ordered fish and chips.

“I think it was a very noble thing you did for Amy’s company,” he told me once the waiter departed.

This was not supposed to be on his radar——or anybody’s.

“I’m not sure I follow you,” I said, trying to feign ignorance.

He put down his water glass. “Liam, you should know that I have friends in all the local banks and law offices.”

I sighed. “It seemed like a good investment.”

“Right. It sounded to me like a very honorable thing to do.”

He was being cagey about what he knew, and this was dangerous ground. I’d clearly underestimated Hue Schmulian.

“Did you know I knew your father?”

This statement also surprised me. We’d talked several times, and he’d never mentioned it before.

“Wendell?”

“Yes,” he said. “Wendell and I were in the same fraternity in college and kept in contact through the years.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“He was a good man.”

“The best,” I agreed.

“He would have been proud of you for helping Amy that way.”

The waiter brought us our fish and chips, and we started devouring the food as he regaled me with a few of Wendell’s exploits in college.

“And then there was the time we were at the beach drinking beer around the fire with these two girls. Wendell dares them to go skinny dipping with us.”

He laughed. “So they start undressing and tell us to get in the water first. Naturally, we peel everything off as fast as we can. We run and dive into the surf. I was surprised by how cold the water was, but the real shock was when we looked back and the girls had thrown our clothes into the fire and were running away.”

Hue and I laughed so hard, we got stares from the other customers.

After a moment, Hue composed himself enough to continue. “Needless to say, getting back to the frat house that night wasn’t easy.”
