After that, the stories became more tame.

“I know the article in the paper is all about women you met before Amy,” he said after a while.

I nodded. “There hasn’t been anyone else since her.”

“When do you plan to ask her?”

I took a sip of my Coke. “Ask her what?”

“Why, to marry you, of course.”

This conversation had suddenly ventured into dangerous territory. “I think it’s a little too early.”

“It’s never too early for the right woman,” he said. “I took longer than I should have with Felicia, and I almost lost her.”

I’d made the same mistake with Roberta and regretted it.

He put down his water glass. “I understand you haven’t been with Amy long, but for the right woman, it’s long enough.”

I contemplated his statement. He didn’t understand how short the time had been. Or did he?

“It’s just some advice from an old man, and you can take it or leave it.”

“Thanks,” I replied.

“Felicia and I think she’s a gem.”

That was understandable; everybody liked Amy.

“But that’s only half the reason I invited you down here,” he continued.

I waited for the bombshell to drop.

“I also wanted to confess something,” he said.

This conversation was getting curiouser and curiouser, as they said inAlice in Wonderland.

“I had a visit from Damien Winterbourne.”

I set my jaw, trying to control my anger.

“Personally, I think your offer is a very fair one,” he continued.

I didn’t have to wait long for thebut.

“But he’s bid twenty percent over you, and that’s something I just can’t ignore.”

I took in a deep breath. “What if we were to match his offer?

“You could,” he said. “But he assured me he would beat whatever you offer by twenty percent. I believe him, and I think it would just be an exercise in futility on your part.”

There it was. Winterbourne had put a target on my back, and was determined to beat me in each and every deal.

I took another sip of my Coke as I formulated the question in my mind. “You said he outbid us by twenty percent?”

“Yes, that’s right. Twenty percent to the dollar,” Hue replied.

He’d just given me a very crucial piece of information.
