Finally.

“Yes?”

“We have a fish on the line,” he told me.

This was the news I've been waiting for. “Who is it?” I asked anxiously.

“Just a fish right now. Won't know who it is exactly until we reel him in.”

“How does this work?”

He let out an exasperated breath. “All I know right now is that the information got to Winterbourne.” He paused. “It'll take a little time to track it back precisely, but they went for the bait. So now it's just a matter of time before I figure out what path it took.”

“Thanks, Nick.” This was the best news I'd had in a long time.

“You're welcome, douchebag.”

It was the first time he had said anything normal to me. Perhaps we were making progress.

“One other thing,” he added. “This guy Winterbourne's accounts are odd.”

“Right now I don't care about how he does business, just as long as he isn't doing it by spying on me.”

We got off the line after I asked him to give my regards to Katie.

Next I dialed my uncle.

“Liam, I have great news,” he said in greeting.

“The Matt Hudson check finished?” I asked.

“Unfortunately, no. Not yet,” he said. “Did you get my message on your answering machine?”

“No, I’m only walking in the front door now.”

Our doorman, Carl, greeted me as I passed him on the way to the elevators. “There was a delivery for you earlier. Miss Amy carried it upstairs.”

“Thanks, Carl,” I mouthed silently to him as I continued to listen to my uncle on the way to the elevators.

“Ah, well, I have had success on another front,” Garth began. “I received a call today from the Dean of Admissions at Johns Hopkins. He has opened up a place for you in the medical school this fall.”

The elevator door closed, and the car started its upward journey.

“That’s great,” I shouted into the phone. I couldn’t believe it. I had given up hope for this year and already planned another set of applications next year.

“This requires that you attend the new student orientation on the eighteenth and pay a few miscellaneous fees. They promised to send you a package of material, which should arrive today. I am sorry that it took me so long to be of help to you in this matter.”

Upstairs, the deadbolt was unlocked. I picked up the FedEx envelope on the front table and ripped it open. Inside were an incoming student checklist, housing application, and first semester bill for Johns Hopkins, along with a letter telling me I had been admitted and needed to attend a new student orientation.

“I just got home, and the material is here. I don’t know how to thank you enough for this, Uncle Garth.”

“No thanks necessary. I am certain you will become a fine doctor.”

After hanging up, a quick survey of the rooms yielded no Amy. A check of the patio also came up empty. A half-empty glass of juice on the counter indicated she had been home.

She must have gone out for a walk on the Common.

The bottle of pinot grigio in the fridge was almost empty. I poured what was left into a glass and went to change. I downed the wine in celebration on the way to the bedroom.
