Passing into the closet to hang up my coat, I caught a glint of light from the nightstand. Walking over, I found it was the ring I’d given Amy and a house key atop a folded piece of paper.

I opened the paper and read the note.

Liam,

I know you’ll make a wonderful doctor.

I’ll arrange to get my things later.

Goodbye,

Amy

Fuck.

I threw the glass across the room. It shattered against the wall, glass shards littering the carpet. What the fuck was going on? I hadn’t talked to her about this because I thought med school was so far in the future——ourfuture.

Now it looked like I was keeping things from her.

Dammit! I have to find my woman.

Amy

I closedmy apartment door behind me and came face to face with the reality that was my fucked-up life.

The envelope on the table reminded me I had a court session scheduled with Matt and his attack-dog lawyer tomorrow. I hadn’t confided in Liam, but I had gotten a notice last week that included a picture of me wearing the emeralds Liam had bought me. The letter claimed that I had hidden money from my cheating now-ex-husband and the court, and Matt was now entitled to half my interest in Tiffany’s Fine Chocolates. Show up or be held in contempt of court, it had read.

Fucking scumbags.

Shakespeare had it right: first we kill all the lawyers.

A bottle of wine called me from the fridge. I unscrewed the cap and poured a large glass, nothing dainty and ladylike about my drinking tonight.

A few weeks ago my problem had been finding the right investors to provide the financing we needed for Tiffany’s and all the people there. Now I’d fixed that, only to have my scumbag ex threatening to take it all away. He hadn’t done one iota of work to make Tiffany’s a success, and now he was demanding half my stake in the company Samantha and I had toiled to launch. What an asshole.

A few weeks ago I had been happy to go on dead-end dates with a string of mostly losers. Okay, not exactly happy, but at least I wasn’t getting my heart broken.

Then along came Liam, and my world was turned upside down. He’d drawn me out until I’d dared to feel again. I’d felt like a desired woman, a girlfriend, even a lady. Now that was gone, snatched away from me by fate.

I poured another glass and settled in to watchJudge Judy. The show always made me feel better because some of the people on there were even stupider than me.

Judge Judy had just finished chastising some moron to pay his girlfriend for the damage he’d done to her car. And, no it didn’t matter that he had only wrecked it because he was drunk when she threw his ass out of the apartment. It didn’t make it her fault just because it was the beer in her fridge he got drunk on, and no, it didn’t make a difference that she’d refused to bail him out. That only made her smart. The guy nearly blew a gasket, which I guess is why they have a bad-ass bailiff in her fake court.

A knock sounded at my door.

“Amy.” It was Liam’s voice from the hallway.

I approached the door. “Go away.”

“We need to talk,” he said.

“No, we don't. The job is done. The Springbok negotiations are over. You said so yourself. I fulfilled my part of the bargain.”

He waited for me to say something more, but I didn't. “Amy, we need to talk.”

“You already said that, remember? I told you I would be your fake girlfriend to get the deal done, and it's done, so now I'm done.”
