Liam kissed me, surprising me.

“What was that for?”

“I just had to kiss the most beautiful woman in town,” he said in a booming voice that filled the lobby.

“Why, thank you,” I said softly, trying to be the lady he deserved.

I took in a deep breath of clean morning air as we exited the building. This sad chapter of my life was finally closed. I could now move on to the next. No looking back; Liam had made me promise. And I would keep that promise to my man.

My gentleman.

Liam held the door for me as we exited to the street. “What would you like for lunch? There’s awesome Italian just down the block.”

I gave him a quick kiss. “I can’t today. I have to meet a friend.”

“I can give you a lift,” he suggested. “Or maybe I could join you.”

“Sorry, honey. Not today. The two of us have girl stuff to discuss.”

His smile drooped briefly before he recovered. “Love you. See you back home tonight then.” He waved as he walked to the right.

My destination was to the left, but I didn’t dare let him follow me and pop in unannounced. I waited until he turned the corner before I set out for the restaurant.

My lunch date had chosen Indian, and I looked forward to a nice curry. I located her already seated near the back.

“Amy, it’s so good to see you.” She gave me a hug. “Now let me see that ring.”

I showed her my huge engagement ring, which had become the talk of the office.

Her eyes grew. “It’s lovely. I wish I’d gotten one half as nice.”

I took my seat across from her. “Thank you. Liam spoils me.” An understatement of the first magnitude.

She waited patiently for me to begin.

“Felicia, I want to thank you for agreeing to meet me today.”

It was time for Felicia Schmulian and me to get our men to move past stupid.

Chapter 38

(One week later)

Liam

Syd Kovner strodeinto the boardroom like he owned the place, as he surely thought he did. Based on our last status update, a month ago, we were still behind our target and right where he wanted us: at his mercy.

Craig Barnett followed behind, as he always did.

Josh, Martin, and I greeted them, and we took seats around the table. I sat at the head, with Josh and Martin on one side and our cranky investors on the other.

Syd smirked. “I think we’re here to review progress against your milestones today.”

He was ready to chop us off at the knees.

“That’s right,” Josh answered.

I adjusted my notepad. “Martin, why don’t you get us started.”
