He didn’t realize yet he was struggling in quicksand.

The next grenade came out of Uncle Garth’s folder. “These pictures might refresh your memory.” He slid across the wedding pictures of Matt and Svetlana the Hanson firm had uncovered.

“You should have told me, Matt,” Max said angrily.

Even I could tell he was lying.

Matt closed his eyes and took a deep breath, but stayed quiet.

Uncle Garth had prepared for this and now pulled out the next piece of evidence. He smiled as he passed it to the indignant attorney.

“That email chain shows you and he discussed it several times, and you advised him not to disclose it in return for half of the additional spousal support payments.”

Max’s face lost its color. “Those are attorney-privileged communications.”

Uncle Garth was now ready to drop the hammer on the king of late-night TV.

“Not when they pertain to criminal conspiracy and fraud,” he noted. “You, Mr. Forrester, received ten thousand dollars from the account of Svetlana Donkova to arrange her marriage to Matthew here for the purpose of gaining entry to the United States. You hid Mr. Hudson’s remarriage from the court, and I do believe the state bar takes a very dim view of such practices.”

Max looked about ready to puke. “Perhaps we were a bit hasty in rejecting your offer.”

Uncle Garth shook his head. “As I said previously, that offer is now off the table.”

I squelched a giggle; we were coming to the fun part.

“Ms. Hudson will be filing a motion with the court to amend the settlement. She will demand seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars from your client, which is half of the inheritance he received six months before the divorce, which you and he also kept hidden from Ms. Hudson and the court. That is, along with recapture of all monies already paid to your client.”

The evil duo was completely deflated. They had nowhere to hide.

“You may keep those,” Uncle Garth said as we stood to leave. “We have additional copies for the authorities.”

Pretty Young Thing was still watching her phone as we passed by her on the way to the elevator.

As soon as the doors closed, I gave Uncle Garth a quick hug. “Thank you so much for all this.”

“Anything for a soon-to-be family member.”

The elevator car started its descent.

“I thought that was fun,” he said, handing me my phone with the recording.

I laughed, concurring with the sentiment. I couldn’t wait to play the recording for Liam.

“How’d it go?” Liam asked as soon as we emerged in the lobby.

Uncle Garth had insisted he not come upstairs with us. A physical altercation might have ruined everything.

“Smashing,” I said, trying to pick a word Uncle Garth might use.

Liam hugged me. “Can’t wait to hear the replay.”

“I expect that your court date will go quite well,” Uncle Garth told me.

Liam’s smile grew.

“If you two lovebirds will excuse me, I have an appointment with the State Board of Bar Overseers.”

After another quick hug, Liam’s uncle was gone.
