He read the screen and chuckled. “I told you. It's just their style. They'll cancel the first two meetings.”

“But why?” I asked.

He pulled into traffic with a quick blip of the throttle. Having Liam drive me to work every day in this car was a treat. Going back to riding the Red Line in was going to be an adjustment when this ended.

“It's a power play on their part.” Liam was clearly not a fan. “I've dealt with them before, and I’ve learned to check my wallet after every meeting.”

I laughed. “They can't be that bad.”

“They’re worse. Those guys are snakes in suits. It’s as close as you'll ever get to meeting two-legged reptiles.”

I'd been warned, and it was worth paying attention to the warning if it came from Liam. I hadn’t heard a mean comment out of him about anybody until this. “I'll be careful.”

Another text arrived.

SAM: Meeting rescheduled to after lunch

“I guess you were wrong,” I told Liam. “The meeting’s not canceled; they moved it to the afternoon. They’re not playing the games you thought.”

He sucked in a loud breath, and his brow creased. “Lighthouse is your only choice. Winterbourne can’t be trusted.” He accelerated as the light turned green.

Liam

Once I dropped Amy off, thoughts of Winterbourne got my blood boiling. I didn’t have her as a distraction anymore, so I stewed about her meeting with them instead. Somehow they were in on every deal I even approached. And for the last two quarters, Damien Winterbourne had totally screwed up my life.

Once in the elevator up to my office, I forced myself to focus on other things by texting my Uncle Garth.

ME: Any progress?

My uncle was being unusually non-communicative.

I exited the elevator, and Veronica nodded toward my office as I approached.

“He's only been waiting for ten minutes,” she whispered. “If he tells you anything else, don’t believe him.”

I found Josh inside as I entered. He turned, making an exaggerated show of checking his watch. “You're late.”

I double checked my watch. “Bullshit. I’m ten minutes early.”

“To the office maybe. But you missed our court time.”

Shit.

I sighed. “I'm sorry, Josh. I fucked up.”

We’d scheduled a squash court for this morning, and it had completely slipped my mind.

He got out of his chair. “You fucked something this morning, all right, and I'll bet it was that pretty little brunette you got yourself shacked up with.”

“It's not that,” I told him. “I just forgot. Sorry.”

“Yeah, right,” he said with obvious disbelief. He made his way toward the door. “You were probably afraid I'd whip your ass.”

I grabbed my little red squeeze ball and threw it at him. “That'll be the day.”

He caught the ball and threw it back harder, but his aim sucked.
