I repeated my spiel.

“I’ll think about it,” Nick responded.

I let out a breath.

“Now, what would you like to ask?” Nick said.

I explained the situation to him.

“I don’t give a fuck. I’m fresh out of fucks today. Fix it yourself.”

“Nick, cut it out. He’s family,” I heard Katie say in the background.

Nick huffed audibly over the phone. “Okay, what’s the time frame on this?” he asked.

“I need to know right away,” I told him. I made a mental note to send Katie a thank you with some chocolate.

“Then this is what I’ll need,” he said and began laying out the information he needed: names, emails, phone numbers, an org chart, and a contact at our payroll service.

“And this is what I want you to do when I call you to say I’m ready,” he said. He went on to detail the plan. It was simple enough.

I agreed.

“And, douchebag, this is going to cost you.”

That was not good news. I dreaded what the payment might be, given our history. “Sure, what?”

“You can buy me a keg next time you’re out here,” he said before handing the phone back to Katie.

“I still want to hear about your girlfriend,” Katie said as soon as she got the phone back.

“Later, Katie, I promise.”

I hung up and found Amy on the couch in the great room.

She looked at me expectantly as I sat next to her. “Well?”

I pulled her close. “You were right. He’s going to help.”

She slapped my thigh. “Told you. You’re family now.”

I kissed the top of her head. With Nick’s help lined up, and my woman by my side, things looked better already.

Chapter 23

Amy

It had beena hectic day at work, and I’d gotten a strange phone call from an old friend. My mind was swirling, and I was five minutes late and still two blocks away from where I was supposed to meet my former college roommate. I didn’t like it when other people were late, and Ihatedit when I was the one holding someone else up.

I pushed open the door and entered the restaurant’s darkened interior. My first scan came up empty. I hoped I wouldn’t embarrass myself by not recognizing her after all these years.

“Amy.” The call came from a booth near the back.

I started over and recognized Natalie as I got closer. She and I had been freshman- and sophomore-year roommates at Brown. Her face hadn’t changed, but everything else about her had.

We hugged briefly.

“It’s been so long,” she said. “You look great.”
