“Nick, it’s Liam for you,” I heard her say.

“Hi, douchebag,” Nick said, taking the phone. “Whatever you have to say, make it quick.”

“I called to say I’m sorry,” I told him.

“And what else?” he asked.

“And I need your help.”

“You’re a piece of shit, ya know that?”

“Yeah,” I answered.

“Say it,” he demanded.

“I know I wasn’t——”

He hung up. The fucker hung up on me.

I dialed back. I clearly needed Katie’s help with this.

“Say it, douchebag,” Nick said, answering the phone.

“Be nice,” I heard Katie say in the background.

“I am being nice,” Nick told her.

“Say what?” I asked.

“Bite me.” He hung up again.

I was losing at this game. I hit redial again.

“I’m listening,” he said.

I guessed at the magic words. “I’m a piece of shit.”

“Now we have something we can agree on,” Nick said, laughing. “Now what was that apology again?”

“I apologize for getting you kicked out of school.”

“And?” he asked.

I thought for a moment and drew a blank.

“Call back when you figure it out, you piece of shit.”

He hung up on me again.

I redialed after concocting a more thorough apology.

“I’m listening,” he said.

“I’m sorry for starting the fight. I’m sorry for lying to the principal about it, and I’m sorry that it caused you to get kicked out of school.”

I hoped that was complete enough to pass the test.

“I didn’t quite catch all that.”
