Page 28 of Fragile Lies

We text every day just like before, but this time our texts have gotten a lot dirtier. Now, we even talk on the phone and somehow it always leads to phone sex.

“What’s got you smiling?” I gasp at Lilah’s voice startling me. I hadn’t heard her walk into my office at all.

I clear my throat. “I’m not smiling.”

She leans against the door, arms folded over her chest. “Uh huh, sure you’re not. Who’s the boy? Is it Jax?” She wags her brows. Nope, she still doesn’t know about me and Jax, and I don’t have plans to tell her.

“What! Absolutely not!” My cheeks grow hot and I whirl around, facing my laptop, pretending to be wrapped up in work. “You know how I feel about players,” I mutter.

“Okay, if you say so. But there’s nothing you can’t tell me, Lex. I want you to be happy. And, something tells me Jax is more than just a player he wants everyone else to think he is. Maybe it’s worth exploring.”Oh, believe me I’ve been exploring him plenty.

“Yep, okay. I’ll—ugh think about it. Sushi later?” I ask, glancing back at her.

She squints her eyes into thin slits, still clearly suspicious. “Okay. It’s a date.” She finally leaves just as I release a heavy whoosh of a breath.

Suddenly, my cell vibrates on the desk with an incoming text. I open it, grinning at the picture of Jax eating cotton candy like a little kid, some of it stuck to his mouth.

Jax: Hey babe. Do you like cotton candy and baseball?

Lexi: Not so much baseball…

Jax: Gabe bailed on me for tomorrow’s Mets game and I have an extra ticket. Join me? Please?

Lexi: I don’t think so.

It’s one thing to hang out in private but going out in public as though we’re a couple? I don’t want to confuse my heart. It’s already more confused than I’ve ever bargained for.

Jax: Oh, come on! You’re supposed to be my friend.

He attaches a picture of himself with the saddest frown I’ve ever seen on a man, the cotton candy still glued to his lips, and my heart squeezes while a laugh bursts out. Damn his blue eyes, and those perfectly chiseled cheekbones, and damn that smile. You know what? Just damn him in all his glory.

Lexi: You’re milking this friend thing a little too hard. Oh, and we’re supposed to be keeping us on the down low, we can’t be seen in public.

Jax: Says who? If we’re caught, we can say we’re friends. Itisthe truth.

Lexi: Milking it…Plus, I just told Lilah today how much I can’t stand you. I hate lying.

Jax: So tell her the truth. You’re the one who wants us to stay in the shadows. I’m perfectly happy letting everyone know just how hard you make my cock.

Lexi: You’re disgusting.

Jax: But are you smiling?

Definitely am.

Jax: You are, aren’t you? I wish I were there to see it. You have the most breathtaking smile.

I know they say a heart could skip a beat, but mine just jumped. Why does he say things like that? I should tell him to stop but I know I won’t.

Lexi: Fine. I’ll go with you. Stop groveling.

Jax: It worked, didn’t it? I’ll pick you up at 4.

Lexi: Yeah, okay, whatever.

Jax: Xo.

Lexi: I still hate you by the way.
