I sigh, giving her my wrists as I lay back and she binds me to the bed once more, the room filling with an eerie silence.

She turns to walk out of the room.

“Mariella?” I say, her head turned in my direction.

“I know that you think my fate hasn’t revealed itself, but it has. I made Marco mad and he’s decided that my family and I are all going to die. And this time... I believe him.” I breathe, the air in the room charged with electricity now.

She doesn’t say anything, just stands there staring at me before she marches towards the door and exits. Before she does, I swear I could see the outline of her head shaking, as if she was saying no, not yet.

CHAPTERTEN

Marco

I’m on my fourth glass of bourbon when my mother comes storming into my office, her face pinched with anger and her long braid flying behind her like a whip. The last time I’ve seen this woman with her hair down was when my father died and now come to think of it, the last time that I’ve seen her angry as well.

“Mama, can I help you with something—” I try to ask, but she marches straight to my desk and throws my feet down from where they are crossed on the wood before she slaps me straight across the face, my glass of bourbon falling from my hands and shattering onto the floor.

What in the actual fuck?

“Jesus! What is wrong with you—” I yell, trying to stand before she slaps me once more, her face screwed up with an anger I’ve never seen before.

“Your father would be fucking ashamed of you!” She shouts, stunning me into silence.

“Excuse me?” I hiss, standing fully now as I wipe my face, towering over her small frame.

“You heard me! Now sit down and listen to your mother for once in your goddamn life, Marco! I mean it!” She shouts, her eyes filled with rage as she practically spits her words at my face.

I narrow my eyes at her, lowering myself back down into my office chair as I wipe the spilt bourbon from my Armani suit.

“I never once have asked about what goes on in this business, but you’d be a fool to think that your mother doesn’t know the fucking code of conduct.” She paces in front of me like a mad woman.

“Meaning?” I growl, trying to not let my anger rise.

“Meaning that your father was a hard son of a bitch, but he never kidnapped an innocent woman and fucked around with her until he killed her! That’s what I mean! He’d be rolling over in his grave right now if he knew and I swear I have half the mind to put you in your place myself for what you’ve done to this poor girl.”

The girl. Of course. She went and talked to Lori and the blind little serpent got into her head.

“That girl is not innocent, mother. Let us not forget, her father is the one that murdered your husband. Her father is the reason why this family almost lost control and almost got taken over by another. It is her blood that almost cost you your own safety!” I hiss at her, angry that I ever allowed her to see the girl in the first place.

“Herfather. Nother,” she says angrily and I immediately laugh in her face.

“Are you new to this world, mama? Surely, you can’t be that obtuse. She is guilty by association. She is my revenge. Becauseherfather is the reasonmineis rolling in his fuckinggraveright now, or did you forget that because of a little sob story?” I say, not backing down as her face begins to redden.

“You can do what you will, kidnap her, deprive her, kill her. I would expect that, but we did not raise you to touch and ruin any woman as you have done with her. That is sick, Marco and it is a line this family will never fucking cross,” she says, angry disappointment shining through her dark eyes as she stares down at me.

I swallow, my Adam’s apple bobbing as an eerie silence fills the room.

“What has she told you?” I tilt my head at her as I lean back in my chair, my jaw clenching as if I am chomping down on bricks.

“She said nothing, but her tears did. I don’t know what I did wrong with raising you, but I’ll be damned if you make me out to be a stupid woman. I know when a girl is hurting because of a man, because of a man that she feels for. If you really wanted her to pay, you wouldn’t have touched her body and played with her heart. Even your father wouldn’t stoop that low,” she hisses, her venom landing right at my feet.

I stand up immediately, this constant talk of my father pissing me off even more.

“What. Did. She. Say. To. You.” I try not to raise my voice, but right now, my anger is palpable.

She crosses her arms at me, her head tilted up in my direction as she narrows her eyes on my face, disgust evident. If I wasn’t so pissed off right now, I’d feel upset that I made her this way. I’d feel disappointed.

“The only words she said aloud were that you sealed the fate of her and her family’s death. The hickey on her neck said everything else.”
