“Yeah, I’m fine. Why?”

“You look kinda…”

“Long day.”

“How goes the search for Celia? Any leads?”

I shook my head.

“Come on Nora, I know you’re up to something. What is it?”

I shook my head again. “Nothing.”

She squared me with a look and all I could do was sigh and admit, “Nothing I can tell you about yet.”

Jodie pulled me right into her lap. “How about this.” She put her arms around me, holding on tight. “I won’t let go until youtell mewhat you’re up to.”

I laughed helplessly. “Really, Jodie?”

“Yes. I know that look. You’re doing something incredibly stupid or extremely dangerous and I want to know what it is.”

I expelled a loud breath, dropping my shoulders in defeat. “Fine. You want to know?”

“Yes.”

“I got a job at the club where Celia worked. I’m gonna look for clues.”

“You got a job? Doing what? Waitressing?”

I shook my head. “Dancing.”

“You meanstripping.”

“Yeah.” I held my breath, waiting to hear her judgement.

“And will you be able to pull it off? You’re not exactly an exhibitionist.”

“I’ll do whatever I have to.”

She drew away trying to take a better look at me. “You sound determined.”

“I am.”

“Well… what can I do to help?”

I kissed her cheek. “You’re doing it. It means a lot that you’re not discouraging me.”

Jodie sighed. “You’re stubborn. I don’t think I could change your mind anyway. When do you start?”

“Tonight.”

“Shit.”

“Yeah.”

“Are you ready?”

I shrugged. “No idea. Guess I’ll have to get on the pole and see.”
