He laughed. “I’m not hiding a thing. But some things are obvious, no?”

I looked around the room again, noting the buttery softness and coziness of the comforter I was under; the no doubt thousand thread count sheet beneath; the pillows, all done in brilliant white, not a stain to be seen anywhere. The four-poster mahogany bed provided a suitable dark contrast to the bedding, all monogrammed with his initials in gold.

No wonder he said it should have been obvious this was his home.

“But why am I here?”

He grinned. “Did you want me to leave you in the club, drooling over my expensive leather furniture?”

I stared at him in wide-eyed shock. “What?”

“You fell asleep in the club.” He grinned, “I didn’t know I wore you out that much. You should have asked me to call you an Uber to take you home.”

My lashes fluttered in embarrassment as I remembered. Ihadbeen feeling groggy and lethargic as I left the changing room, and so I stopped at the VIP bar to get some water to drink. I must have fallen asleep while I was waiting for it—hence the drooling comment, I presumed.

“That would have required me knowing that I was gonna fall asleep on the chair.”

He frowned. “Are you alright? This can’t be just about the sex last night.”

I froze, trying not to show my fear. “I…” I cleared my throat, “Just a long day, a longer night, and then what we did to top it off.” I huffed a quiet, nervous laugh.

He was still frowning at me, but he also smiled absentmindedly. Something began to vibrate close by.

He pointed to the bedside table. “Oh, your phone has been going off. Someone named Lita keeps texting you.”

I frowned. “You were reading my texts?”

“Who’s Lita?” he asked.

I glared at him. “Just because I slept with you once doesn’t give you the right to read my texts.”

“I didn’t read them. I could just see the name. Who is she, and why is she blowing you up?”

I reached for my phone, unlocked it, thanking heaven for phone security. I was quite sure if he could unlock my phone, Alexei would have read all my texts. I was getting a very possessive vibe from him—which was confusing because it contrasted sharply with everything I’d been told about him.

I read the texts, my heart sinking. My grandma was frantic. I saw she’d called me no less than three times during the night.

Where are you?

Are you alright?

Will you make it in time for the funeral?

“Shit,” I murmured as I read.

“What is it?” Alexei’s deep baritone startled me, and I moved my phone away as he leaned over to read my texts.

“Nothing. Just… my landlord asking for rent.”

“You hard up? I can pay the rent for you if you want.”

“Nope! Thanks.” I squirmed away from him as I typed a quick reply.

Hi Lita. Long night in the ER. Of course, I’ll make it for the funeral. Sorry for worrying you.

“It’s no trouble.”

“No. Really. Thank you, but no.”
