Page 102 of Wicked

I can’t believe I fell head over heels for a man who will never be on the same page as me. It was stupid because I just ignored the warning bells going off in my head because of the draw he had on me.

Remy may be wickedly handsome and capable of making me feel things I never knew existed, but it was all a lie. My heart aches as I take one last look around the bedroom. I’ve spent many nights here since I arrived, but this room never felt like mine. This place only felt like a home once I started sleeping in Remy’s room.

There’s an odd sense of grief as I’m leaving Mom here. She’s buried in the cemetery nearby, and Mia said she’ll take me to visit one last time. I won’t be able to return, at least not for a while.

Once things die down and Remy forgets about my existence, perhaps it won’t be such a big deal.

My cell rings, and I see Mia’s name on the front.

“Hey.”

“Hey, I’m out front. Are you ready?” she asks, whispering.

We both know we’ll be screwed if we get caught. “Yeah, I’ll be out in a minute.”

“Great, see you soon.” She ends the call.

I swallow hard and grab my suitcase, dragging it out the door. Being quiet with your life packed in a suitcase is difficult, but I do my best. My eyes linger on Remy’s bedroom door. The ache intensifies as I realize this is it. There’s no going back.

I get to the front door, and Mia is waiting there, looking nervous.

She rushes toward me. “I’ll help with that.”

“Thank you so much for helping me,” I say.

She smiles at me. “Of course! What are sisters for?”

It’s wild that she’s going against her dad like this, but I’m so thankful, as I had nowhere else to turn.

“I got Killian to get you that bank account,” she says as we drag my heavy suitcase to the trunk.

“Thank you! I can change the payee account now for my book.” I feel a flood of relief as Remy thinks he controls my money, but I won’t let him from now on.

“You’re welcome.” She passes me a folder. “The details and cards are in there.” She purses her lips. “I did put a little in to see you through.”

I narrow my eyes. “What’s a little?” I ask.

She shrugs. “Twenty grand.”

I shake my head. “I can’t accept that, Mia.”

She crosses her arms over her chest. “You can and you will. You’ll need somewhere to stay and a deposit on a place. Think of it as giving you back your money for the account my dad stole.”

“I didn’t have twenty grand.”

“With interest,” she says.

I laugh. “I’m going to pay you it all back.”

“You better not.”

I glance at my watch. “We need to get going before we get caught.”

“Okay, let’s go.” She jumps into the driver’s side of her Mercedes soft top, and I get in on the other side.

A tense silence fills the air before she clears her throat. “I can’t believe I’ll never see you again.”

My stomach churns as she drives away from the house. “Me neither, but surely, after a few years, it’ll all be forgotten, and I can return, right?”
