His jaw is slack as he murmurs. “End me.”

At least this idiot isn’t asking me to spare him, as that was never on the cards.

“End you?” I echo my voice, a low rumble that reverberates off the cold, damp walls of the basement. “I’m not sure I’ve put you through enough pain.”

He looks at me with resignation, knowing there’s no escape from this reality.

I play with him more, making him scream and grunt as blood collects in a pool beneath him.

After another few minutes, I surprise myself and give him his dying wish. I drive the blade deep into his chest, right where his heart should be—if he even has one.

The sound that escapes him is almost a sigh, a release, his plea for mercy finally answered. His body convulses once, twice, before falling still. I watch as the light in his eyes flickers and finally dies out, replaced by the emptiness of death.

I step back and look at the carnage. My men will clear it up, so I wash my hands in the sink in the corner. Ella is upstairs at the bar, waiting for me to finish. She knows I’m getting revenge for what he did to her. Once I’ve got all the blood off my hands and face, I grab my jacket off the peg on the wall and walk out of the room to ascend the stairs into my club.

Ella looks nervous as she fiddles with her coaster on the bar. The glass of wine I ordered her is still untouched.

I approach her and put a strong hand on her back. “It’s done,” I breathe.

The tension in her shoulders eases a fraction, and she turns to face me. “You made Alex pay?”

I nod in response. “I’ll make anyone that wrongs you pay.”

Her eyes flash with admiration as I sit on the barstool beside her.

“You’ve hardly touched your drink.”

She breathes in deeply. “I was too anxious.”

“It’s over now.”

Her eyes dip to the blood painted across my shirt. “Shouldn’t you change?”

I tilt my head. “I don’t need to. No.”

Her brows pull together. “But there are people—”

“This is my club, and people know who I am.”

Ella’s throat bobs as she swallows.

I’vewarned her many times about who I am and what I’m capable of, but how her face has paled suggests she’s not okay with it.

She straightens and plays with the ends of her hair. “Right. Shall we go home?”

I tilt my head, sensing her unease over the entire situation. “You’re uncomfortable being seen with me like this?”

She shrugs. “I’m just uncomfortable in general. And tired.”

I clench my jaw. “Fine. We can leave.” I take her hand in mine, noticing the way she flinches. But I ignore it until we’re seated in the back of the limousine.

“Is there a problem?” I ask, sitting opposite her.

Her eyes widen. “What do you mean?”

“You are acting like you are afraid of me, but you know what I’m capable of.” I tilt my head to the side. “Hell, you even said you were glad I would make him pay. What changed?”

She draws in a deep, shuddering breath. “I’m scared of what I’m becoming.”
