“I’m sorry,” I say simply, turning to leave.

“Wait,” Ella says, her voice so small and broken. “I-I don’t want to be alone, can you...” she trails off because she knows I’ve been fucking terrible to her since she arrived here. She shakes her head. “Never mind.”

“Do you have any friends I can call for you?”

Her throat bobs. “No one within a few hundred miles.” Tears stream down her face. “What’s going to happen now?”

The one question Ididn’twant her to ask me. “I haven’t figured that out yet.” I cross my arms over my chest.

“Are you going to kick me out?”

My lips purse as kicking her out on the street is tempting to ensure I don’t cross the line with her. However, I couldn’t. It would be like throwing her to the wolves, as what happened to her mom might happen to her. Or they might sell her into sex trafficking because she’s so young and beautiful.

My possessive side roars to life at the thought of any other man touching her.

“Remy?” Her soft voice pushes me for an answer.

“We’ll discuss what happens in the following weeks. First, let’s grieve your mother and bury her.”

“What am I going to do?” Ella asks, and her entire face crumbles, and she starts sobbing again. “Please,” she gasps.

I clench my jaw, knowing she’s asking me to console her without outright saying it. And I can’t help myself. I stride across the room and sit beside her on the bed, pulling her against my chest.

She clings to me as if I’m her lifeline, and I wrap an arm around her, trying to keep my mind out of the gutter. Ella just lost her mother; all I can think about is stripping her and making her mine. My cock is as hard as stone as she sobs into my shirt, clawing at me like a crutch.

“I don’t know how I’m going to go on,” she mutters.

I’m tense, trying to control my sickening urges. “Are you sure there’s no one I can call?”

She pauses and looks at me, and goddamn, I’ve never seen a woman cry and look this fucking angelic doing it. “W-Wait.” She sits up, pulling out of my arms. “Mia said if there’s anything I need to call her.” Her throat bobs as she swallows. “Maybe she could come over.”

Best idea yet.

I need to get out of this room right away. Standing, I nod. “I’ll ring Mia for you and send her up when she arrives.”

I turn toward the door, but Ella grabs my hand. Her soft skin against mine sends an electric shock through my veins. “I’ve got her number on my cell. Please don’t leave. I can’t be alone right now.”

Motherfucker.

“I hardly think I’m any use, am I?” I ask, glancing at her.

Her lip wobbles. “You don’t need to be, just be here.” She’s so damn vulnerable, and my dark heart sings seeing her like this, easily malleable. If I kissed her, she’d undoubtedly melt into me, desperate for a distraction and someone to support her. But I wouldn’t support her. I’d take full fucking advantage of her.

“Okay, give her a call.” I sit down, ignoring my crotch straining against my pants.

She dials the number and then glances at me. “Can you…” she holds the phone out.

I snatch it, praying my daughter will pick it up.

“Hey, Ella. What’s up?”

“Mia, it’s your dad.”

“Why the fuck are you calling me off of Ella’s phone?” She gasps suddenly. “Don’t tell me you killed her.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. I’m calling you because Ella isn’t up to telling you this.” I clear my throat. “Her mother was killed in Vegas today, and she wondered if you could come over.” I pause, glancing at Ella. “Be a support as I’m no use.”

“Oh my God, of course. I’ll be over in half an hour tops. Killian is here so he can take care of Ronan.”
