“Yeah, Dad. You’ve told me lies. If you’d excuse me, I’m going to find my wife.” He turns and walks away, leaving me reeling.

Am I that fucking obvious?

I won’t tell Ella about the plan to auction her marriage contract until the last moment. I know she will fight me over it.

Searching the room, my eyes land on her at the bar, getting a drink. When I set eyes on her full, curvy figure, my cock hardens.

She’s wearing a satin black dress that hugs her in all the right places, pushing her full breasts up. Her blonde hair is curled and cascading down her back like a waterfall, and the neckline of her dress is cut low enough to reveal just the right amount of cleavage. She may not like the glamorous life, but she suits it.

She looks gorgeous, like an angel sent from Heaven. A dangerous angel, one I’d do anything to have in my bed. My jaw clenches as I imagine slipping off that dress she has on and exploring every inch of her body with my lips until she screamsDaddy.

No.

I can’t have her. She’ll be auctioned off to the best family for her. Once she is, I’ll forget about her and move on with my life. The auction isn’t for six weeks, so I don’t need to tell her yet. I think she will fight me at every turn when I tell her.

Someone clears their throat behind me, and I see Mia glaring at me. “Why are you staring at Ella like that?”

I run a hand across the back of my neck. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Dad, you are obvious.” She shakes her head. “But Ella is too sweet for you. You can’t go there.”

I clench my jaw. “I’m not going there, Mia. She’s younger than you, for fuck’s sake.”

She puts her hands on her hips. “I’ll repeat. I know you. Her age doesn’t matter to you.” She draws in a deep breath. “Don’t hurt her, I like her.”

“I’ve already put her marriage contract up for auction. She’ll have a husband within six weeks.”

Mia’s eyes widen. “Does she know?”

I shake my head. “Not yet. I only agreed on the retainer yesterday.” My eyes narrow. “And you won’t dare tell her until I’m ready. There’s no use in her stewing over it for six weeks.”

Mia looks furious. “Are you going to tell her the night before?”

My jaw works because I would do that if there weren’t four pre-auction events that she must attend. “No, I’ll tell her two weeks before the auction.”

Mia rolls her eyes. “Classic Dad, always putting off the inevitable. So for the next four weeks, I’ve got to pretend I don’t know she’s being sold off?”

I ignore her sarcasm. “Yes, and if you care about her like you say you do, then I suggest you keep it to yourself until the time comes for me to tell her.”

Mia doesn’t say anything, staring at me with a cold glint in her eye before turning and walking toward the bar.

I watch Ella stand by the buffet with an empty plate. She’s been standing there since leaving the bar, staring at the food.

“Dad,” Camilla says my name, and I turn around. “I’m sorry for your loss.”

I look into my daughter’s eyes, wondering where the time went. I remember her as a baby. It feels like it was merely a blink of an eye, and she’s grown up and fled the nest to marry some sadistic professor. “Why are you here, Camilla?”

Her eyes flash with hurt. “Because you invited me.”

I clench my jaw. “And your husband?”

“He’s with the twins.”

I forgot that she has had two babies, neither of whom I’ve met yet. “Right, the grandchildren you won’t let me meet?”

She presses her lips together. “It’s Gavril... He—”

“He took you from me, and now he’s withholding my grandkids, right?”
