She sighs heavily. “Gavril doesn’t trust anyone and believes you might try to...” She trails off as she knows it’s ridiculous. “Give it time.”

I’m not one for being patient. Mia practically did the same thing, but at least her husband had connections and brought something to our family. Gavril stole Camilla and then acts like we’re the fucking assholes.

“I don’t like being treated like a cunt, Camilla. And you know it. So, I want to meet my grandchildren soon.”

She looks into my eyes and nods. “Okay, I’ll make it happen.”

I run a hand over the back of my neck. “Family is everything to me, you know that. I’d never let any harm come to them.”

“Of course,” she replies.

“I’ll see you later.” I walk away from her and toward my study, noticing I don’t see Ella anywhere. I need space to clear my head.

As I walk toward it, I hear soft sobs from the library. I know who it is without even looking.

Ella.

She’s taken her mom’s death hard. I still can’t believe she tried to blame me when Erin disrespected my rules and took off without a word. I may not be a good guy, but I always protect my family, which included Erin, the moment she became my wife.

I should walk by and leave her, especially after what I said in the back of the car. Instead, I knock on the door.

Ella’s eyes widen, and she wipes the tears away frantically as if she’s scared of me seeing her crying. She looks just as beautiful, even with her puffy eyes and red face. “Sorry, I needed some space.”

I swallow hard. “Me too.”

A flash of hope enters her eyes. “Do you want to sit?”

I shouldn’t, but I can’t walk away when she looks this vulnerable. I don’t trust myself to speak. Instead, I sit with her.

“I find it hard to believe she’s gone.”

“You and your mother had a strained relationship, didn’t you?”

Ella nods. “Yes. She never treated me or Dad well when he was alive.”

My heart breaks for her even though I was sure I didn’t have one. I don’t know why I take her hand, but I do it and regret it immediately. Sparks fly between us, and Ella’s eyes darken with lust. I can’t believe this innocent creature wants me the way I want her.

It’s taboo. It’s forbidden. Not to mention, I’m no good for her.

No matter how often I repeat that mantra, I still want her like nothing else. We both know we should pull away, but neither of us does; instead, we look at each other with a dark desire burning between us.

“About what you said in the car—”

“No, Ella.”

Her eyes flash with hurt. “But—”

I pull my hand from hers and shuffle over on the couch as we enter dangerous territory. “I told you. It was a mistake to tell you that, and we should never talk about it again.”

She places her hand on my thigh, excruciatingly close to my straining cock. “What if I want to talk about it?”

“We buried your mom today, and look at the two of us?” I growl, unable to remove her hand from my thigh. “Do you realize how fucked up this is?”

Her throat bobs, and she nods. “I know.” I notice how she starts to doubt herself, making me feel guilty. Because this girl has nothing to feel guilty about, it’s all on me. I told her what I’d been thinking since we met.

“Fuck.” I run a hand through my hair, searching those big sapphire blue eyes. She’s looking at me in a way that makes me crazy. As if I’m the best fucking thing she’s ever seen. As if she craves me as badly as I crave her.

“I’m sorry,” she murmurs, moving to stand. “I think I’m going to go to my—”
