He does the same thing. “Sorry, miss. It’s not working.”

Mia gives him her card. “Don’t worry about it. I got it.”

I pull out my cell and open my banking app. All the money is still in there, but it states the account is on hold. “What the hell?”

“What’s wrong?” Mia asks.

“My account is on hold. I’ve got the cash in there, but there’s a hold on the funds. I’ll ring the bank, and then I’ll transfer you the money.”

Mia waves her hand. “Don’t worry about it. You can get the next lunch.”

I don’t mention that there won’t be a next lunch. Tomorrow I’m flying away from Chicago and not coming back for a while. I excuse myself to call the bank.

“Hello, Northerntrust customer service. How can I help?”

“Hi, I just tried using my card, which was declined. I checked the banking app, and the account is on hold. Can you tell me what’s going on, please?”

“Sure, can I take your account number?”

I give her the number and wait for her to ‘investigate.’

“Thank you for holding, Miss. So it appears that the second account holder put the account on hold.”

“What second account holder? It’s my account.”

She clears her throat. “No, we have a signed document dated a month ago adding Remy Morrone as a full-access member. Are you saying you didn’t authorize this?”

“No, I didn’t.”

“Do you know Remy Morrone?”

“Yes, thank you for letting me know. I’ll be in touch once I get this misunderstanding ironed out.”

“Of course.”

“In the meantime, can you unfreeze the account?”

“No, I’m afraid I can’t because I need both the account holders’ permission.”

I growl. “You didn’t have my permission to freeze it, so why would you need it to unfreeze it?”

“We did have your permission. Yesterday afternoon, we had a call from both you and Remy. The person who called gave all of your security answers.”

Motherfucker.

I end the call, too angry to speak.

Mia’s hand lands on my shoulder. “Is everything okay?”

I spin around to face her, shaking my head. “No, everything is not okay. Your dad has frozen my bank account.”

Mia’s eyes widen. “Shit. Why would he do that?”

It dawns on me then that he must know I paid for the plane tickets yesterday. And then he froze the account to make sure I couldn’t leave.

That bastard.

I won’t sit by while he controls my entire life.
