She glares at him. “Sometimes, I’m not so sure.”

Remy is silent as always, but when I look at him, he’s staring at me.

I can’t stop thinking about what happened in his office three days ago.

He tears his eyes off me and glares at Mia and Leo, who are bickering. “Would you two quit it? It’s hard to believe you’re both adults when you act like this.”

Both Leo and Mia fall silent.

“But tell the truth, Ella. You like older men. That’s why I wasn’t good enough for you, right?” Luca asks.

I glare at him. “No, I just don’t fuck idiots like you two, and you’re supposed to be my stepbrothers.”

Mia makes a fake vomiting sound. “You two are sick for wanting to bang your stepsister.”

Killian nods. “Got to admit that’s pretty fucked up.”

“It’s not like she’s a blood relation. If her mom hadn’t married Dad, I could have met her somewhere, and it wouldn’t be an issue.” Luca shakes his head. “It’s not sick.”

Luca has a point, but it still is taboo, no matter what he says.

Mia throws her hands in the air. “It’s messed up, and you know it!”

Leo laughs. “No, what would be messed up is if Dad and Ella got together.”

My heart nearly stops beating at his words.

Mia shakes her head. “She’s going to be auctioned off, you idiot.”

Remy’s eyes turns dark, and he glares at Leo. “Shut your mouth, or I’ll make sure it’s shut for good.”

A chill runs down my spine, and my heart races. I can feel chemistry sparking between Remy and me.

“Thank fuck we’re here. This conversation has taken a weird fucking turn,” Luca says as the town car stops in front of an elegant hotel in the center of Chicago. Luca and Leo get out, followed by Mia and Killian.

I’m about to follow her out when Remy grabs my wrist. “Don’t listen to them, Ella. Us can’t happen, you know that, right?” He sounds like he’s trying to convince himself more than me.

I nod in response. “Of course. I’m here to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, and you’re the one selling me. It’s crystal clear.”

His jaw clenches. “I told you, I’m not selling—”

“Call it what you want. It feels that way to me.” I get out of the car.

Mia holds her arm out, and I link arms with her. “Come on, let’s go and find your prince charming.”

I chuckle. “Not sure I’ll find him amongst mobsters.”

“You’d be surprised how charming some mobsters can be. I know first hand.”

We walk behind Leo and Luca into the huge hotel with a large ballroom where the pre-auction dinner is being held.

The ballroom is a spectacle of opulence and grandeur. Frosted chandeliers dangle from the ceiling and cast a soft glow upon the polished marble floor, reflecting the glimmer of a hundred twinkling lights.

Majestic columns rise from the floor to meet the intricate crown molding wrapped in golden filigree that glints as the light hits it. Crimson velvet drapes cascade down the enormous windows, offering glimpses of the moonlit city beyond.

Amidst this elegance, clusters of silk-draped tables are scattered, adorned with crystal glassware and white roses.

The hum of hushed conversations and the faint strain of a string quartet reach my ears as we step further into the room. The atmosphere is tinged with anticipation and an undercurrent of danger, a stark reminder of the darkly forbidden nature of this event.
