“Killian!” Mia calls.

He glances up, and I notice the tattoos that stretch up his neck and the flash of his green eyes when he sees Mia. “Hey, baby girl.” His voice has an Irish lilt to it. He steps forward and wraps an arm around her, giving her a kiss. Killian isn’t exactly how I imagined him, as he’s more of a bad boy than I expected. “Is this the infamous Ella?” He gives me a handsome, friendly smile.

I hold out a hand. “It’s good to meet you, finally.”

He takes it and shakes. “Yeah, same. Sorry it wasn’t sooner. I’ve been fucking busy.”

I laugh and so does Mia.

“Ready?” Remy asks in a low voice.

I glare at him. “Not exactly. I’d rather be going anywhere else.” While I understand his twisted logic and why he’s doing this more, it doesn’t mean I’m happy about it.

He could protect me. I know how sick it is to want that. The man who was married to my mother, but I’m coming to think desire isn’t straightforward. It’s confusing and twisted. I can’t explain why I have felt so drawn to him since we met, but it feels like fate.

Mia pulls me away from him. “Come on, let’s not waste our energy on him.”

I nod in agreement and walk away, emboldened by Mia’s encouragement.

Even so, I can feel his gaze like lasers at the back of me. I’m thankful when we walk outside into the cool fall air for some reprieve from the heat my stepdad inspires.

I get into the back first, followed by Mia and then Killian. I’m glad to sit next to the window and hope that the others will be a buffer between me and her dad.

Remy is next to join us, but instead of sitting by Killian, he sits directly opposite me, eyes fixed on mine. Luca and Leo are the last to get in, chatting about something vulgar and disgusting.

I glance at Mia. “Do you know the kind of people that will attend?”

She shakes her head.

“Mafia bosses of all ages,” Killian says.

“You could end up with a guy your age or a seventy-year-old man,” Luca interjects, smirking.

I put my fingers down my throat. “I’m not marrying a man old enough to be my grandpa.”

Leo looks me in the eye. “What’s your limit then? Would you be happy with someone like your stepdad?” His eyes flicker with amusement as I, no doubt, turn the color of beetroot. “I think you’d like calling your husbandDaddywhile he fucks you.”

Mia growls. “Don’t be so crass, Leo.” She leans across and punches him hard on the shoulder.

“Ouch. I’m only messing about.” Leo glares at her.

I’m on fire and can’t look at Remy or I’ll die. At least, that’s how it feels right now.

“Ignore him. He’s an asshole.” Mia smiles at me. “You’re beautiful and will snag a hot young man.” Her brow furrows. “Or older, if that’s your thing.”

Oh my God.

I could kill Leo right about now for being such a dick.

“No,” I practically squeak like a mouse. “My age or a little older is good.”

Luca chuckles. “You’re practically as red as my Ferrari right now. Don’t lie, little sis.”

I glare at him. “I’m not your sister.”

Mia sighs heavily. “Lucky for you. I’ve had to put up with these two my entire life.”

“You love us, Mia,” Leo says.
