She wasn’t a stranger to receiving compliments, but when Knox gave her compliments, shefeltthem. Even just the simple word he’d used, it was the way he’d said it, the look in his eyes. For a moment, the rest of the world disappeared. She forgot who she was, where she was, and what she was doing.

It wasn’t until he handed her the flowers that she blinked and snapped out of her dumbstruck state. "I saw these, and they reminded me of you."

"Thank you." Laura’s hand trembled as she took the arrangement from him. "They’re beautiful."

The door opened, and her niece stepped out. "Do you want me to put those in a vase?"

"Sure. Thanks," she said, handing them to Marissa.

"You two have fun."

"I’ll be back before closing," Laura called out as her niece went back inside.

When the door closed, she hit her car fob, and Knox did the same on his.

"I’ll drive," she explained as she walked to her car.

"No, I’ll drive."

His tone was firm and commanding, which, despite herself, her body reacted to with a shiver of awareness. "Is this some male ego thing?"

"I asked you out; I should drive."

Laura noted that he didn’t deny her accusation as she glanced over her shoulder. "But I’m the one who knows where we’re going."

"Great. Then you can tell me how to get there."

Laura gave it a moment of contemplation: Did it really matter who drove? No. Either way, this would be their last outing. And, at least if she drove with him, he wouldn’t contaminate one more space in her life. As it was, she would never be able to be in her front yard, the apartment, or her shop again without thinking of him there.

"Fine," she agreed.

He opened the door for her, and she stepped into his SUV. It was clean and smelled good, which was more than she could say for a lot of men she’d dated. It didn’t surprise her, though. Knox didn’t strike her as a messy guy.

When he started the car, she leaned over, typed in the address in his navigation, and set back. It said they would be there in twenty minutes.

"Where are we headed?" he asked as he began following the route the voice in the speaker had instructed.

"It’s a surprise," Laura grinned.

"A surprise; I love surprises." He smiled at her.

She didn’t think he was going to like this one.

"We’re here." Laura clapped her hands together as Knox pulled into a parking space.

"Webster Cryobank?" Knox read the sign with a question in his voice.

"Yep."

"This is where we're going on our date?" Knox asked.

"Yep."

"What is a cryobank?" He thought he knew what it was but had to make sure.

"A sperm bank," Laura chirped happily.
