Laura sat in her car and told herself to drive home. But something stopped her. She missed Knox so much that it was physically painful, and he was leaving in a week.

Tonight might be the last time that she got to see him.

Knox’s thumb circled Laura’s back, and she did her best not to melt against him. She wanted to enjoy being in his arms but was still trying to keep some level of guard up out of sheer self-preservation.

She knew that if Kennedy had been able to come with her, she’d be telling her that she had to tell Knox she was pregnant. She knew that because her bestie had been hounding her to do just that every day since she’d found out. But Laura didn’t want to do it at his brother’s wedding. She didn’t feel like this would be the best place to drop that bomb.

The problem was that now that she was with him, all she could do was think about telling him.

"How are you feeling?" he asked, his eyes filled with genuine worry.

"I’m good." She’d been feeling a little better since her doctor’s visit. She wasn’t sure if it was the vitamins or just the adrenaline rush of knowing that she was going to be a mom.

His lips tilted up in the bad-boy grin that had always made her toes curl. "Do you want to sneak out of here?"

"No. We don’t have to... I mean…” She hadn’t meant to say that.

Or maybe it had been a Freudian slip, and that’s exactly what she’d meant to say.

He grinned. "What do you mean we don’t have to..."

His words trailed off, and Laura saw the moment that he realized what she was saying. His eyes widened.

"Are you—"

There was no way that she could lie to him. "Yes. But no one knows."

All of the color drained from his skin. He looked like he’d seen a ghost. Or like the reality of the situation horrified him. Either way, it wasn’t exactly the reaction she’d hoped for. Not that she’d had any expectations. He’d signed up to do his part, and he had. Now, it was all on her.

Still, his response caused tears to fill her eyes. Her heart, which she’d thought was already broken, shattered into a million tiny pieces.

She forced herself to smile. "So, we don’t have to do… anything…anymore. You have fulfilled your part of the agreement."

Laura was barely holding the tears at bay. She knew that at any moment the dam was going to break and emotion would flood her face.

"Please don’t say anything to anyone. I’m going to wait until... well, until… you know." She forced her smile to remain in place, even though her cheeks were trembling. "I’m tired. I’m going to go home."

She turned on her heel and walked off the dance floor, leaving Knox with his jaw open, gaping at her. Her feet moved fast somehow, even though she couldn’t feel her legs at the moment.

When she reached her car in the parking lot, she fumbled with her keys.

"Laura wait!" She heard Knox call her name, but tears were already flowing down her face. She tried to wipe them away as the sounds of his footsteps got closer.

She got in her car and started the engine. As she drove down the long drive that led to the castle, she sucked in a shaky breath.

The entire drive home was blurry thanks to her waterworks, but she didn’t slow down or pull over. She just kept driving. Once she was in her driveway, she finally let out a breath. She was home. She was safe.

Part of her was heartbroken over how that had just gone, and part of her was relieved. Now he knew. It took a weight off her shoulders.

Halfway up the steps, she heard the screeching of tires and turned around to see a car she didn’t recognize pull up in front of her house. She sucked in a startled breath when she saw Knox get out of it.

"Is that Jessa’s car?"

"I don’t know. I grabbed keys from the valet stand and hit the fob."

"You stole Jessa’s car?" Laura couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

He stalked up the driveway. "We need to talk."
