“Yeah, I guess.” Kennedy’s cheeks flamed hotter than before.

“Okay, I’m loving this. Go on.”

“Wow. That’s quite the list. And quite specific.”

“That was part of the assignment. To be as specific as possible.”

“How did you compile it.”

“Trial and error.”

“So have you dated a lot?”

“Yes.”

“What is the worst thing that has ever happened to you on a date?”

Kennedy sort of blacked out for the rest of the call. She was only vaguely aware when Maura asked her about her relationship history and then about her eidetic memory. She did her college party trick of reciting the alphabet backward.

Before she knew it, Maura was saying, “Okay great. Well, it was very nice speaking to you. If you move on to the next round, someone will be in touch within the next few weeks.”

“Okay, great.”

The call disconnected and Kennedy was both relieved it was over and also embarrassed and unsure what to say to Seb about everything he’d just heard. “Um, I’m sorry about that. Today has been crazy and I totally forgot that I’d scheduled that call.”

“No worries. It was very…informative.”

Was that Seb’s way of saying that it was TMI? If it was, she couldn’t blame him.

For the rest of the drive, Kennedy filled the silence with talk about anything and everything that didn’t have to do with her. She asked Seb more about his childhood, his career, his injury, his past relationships. By the time they made it back to Whisper Lake she felt like she’d known him her entire life.

It surprised her how open he was. Also, how intuitive and emotionally self-aware he seemed to be. Most men she’d encountered got defensive if she asked them even slightly personal questions. Seb was an open book. It was refreshing, which was apparently like her audition tape.

Seb pulled up in front of the Snack Shack and Kennedy couldn’t help but feel disappointed that their time was over as she slid her shoes back on before getting out of the passenger seat to go around to the driver’s side. She didn’t want it to end.

When she got to the other side of the SUV Seb was standing holding the door open. She climbed inside and before he shut the door said, “Thanks for letting me catch a ride.”

“Thanks for driving. And I’m sorry that…you had to hear that interview.” Mortified was more like it, but there was nothing she could do about that now.

“I’m not.” The grin that appeared on his lips warmed Kennedy from the inside out as he closed the door and stepped back up onto the curb.

A smile curled on her lips as she backed out of the Snack Shack parking lot.

“Wait!” he called out as he walked back toward the vehicle.

She put her foot on the brake and her heart felt like it was going to pound up and out of her throat as she pushed the automatic window down.

He jogged up to the side of the SUV. “You didn’t finish answering my question.”

Her brow furrowed. “Your question?”

“Right before your call. I asked if you have any tattoos.”

“Oh, right.” Kennedy had completely forgotten about that. “Yeah, just one on my hip. I got it for my nana. For years she’s said she always wanted a tattoo and regretted never getting one, so when she got sick, I got one for her.”

“What is it?” he asked.
