“Are those Mrs. Weathersby’s brownies?”

Seb looked over his shoulder. “They are.”

“Did she know you’d be home tonight?”

Seb had to think about it for a second then he remembered telling her he was just going to take a shower and go to bed. “Uh, I guess.”

“Right. Okay. I think I know what this is.”

He felt his mouth tilt in a grin. “Is this the Needlepoint Mafia?”

Her eyes widened. “You know about them?”

“I do. My brothers and cousins live here.”

“They do?”

“Yeah, Keaton, Ford, and Knox.”

Recognition lit on her face. “Oh, okay. So you must be the youngest brother.”

“I am.”

“Well, Sebastian. Sorry for the mix-up.” She started back down the stairs. “I would love to tell you that it won’t happen again, but those ladies are relentless.”

“Actually. My back is killing me. Would it be okay if I went ahead and took the appointment?”

She turned back to him. “It’s not paid for yet.”

“I can pay.”

“Yeah, I mean sure. Okay.” She nodded and walked back up the steps. As she passed by him, he saw her looking at his chest and her cheeks flushed.

Fuck. Seb hoped that she didn’t think he meant that he wanted to go along with being set up with her. He really did just want the massage. He would make it clear to her that he wasn’t in the market for a girlfriend. Or a hookup. Or anything. Then maybe she’d spread the word.

“Alright, beautiful. You’re up!”Jessa announced as she patted the back of her salon chair.

Kennedy stood from the velvet couch in the waiting room and crossed the cement floor to Jessa’s station. Today her stylist and friend wore a black and white cropped t-shirt, red high-waisted shorts that matched her crimson lip stain, black Mary-Janes with white ankle socks, and large silver hoop earrings. A red bandana tied around her head was the perfect bow to complete her rockabilly wardrobe.

Jessa proudly embraced her vintage style and live-out-loud personality. Kennedy who was a color-in-the-lines girl had always been envious of Jessa’s draw-my-own-picture energy. She wished that she had some of Jess’s fearlessness, not just with fashion but with her life.

Her friend had definitely earned it the hard way. Growing up, Jessa had had a rare heart condition and had been in and out of hospitals. Doctors had given her a grave diagnosis on more than one occasion. Thankfully, a few years back she was able to have a heart transplant and was now living her best happily ever after life with her very hot, very protective deputy sheriff husband.

“Trim and blowout,” Jessa confirmed as Kennedy lowered into the chrome base, hydraulic, black salon chair. She’d had a standing appointment every six weeks for the past decade, but Jess still double-checked every time.

Kennedy was pretty sure that Jess held out hope one day Kennedy would give her the green light to do something more daring like color or a short bob or that she would embrace her natural, wild curls. Sadly, that was never going to happen. As much as Kennedy wished she was that girl who would chop off her hair, or dye it pink, or even just a dark shade of brown, that just wasn’t who she was. She liked to have her hair straightened and cut the same length that she’d had it since middle school.

“So how is Laura doing?” Jess asked as she draped the cape over Kennedy and attached it behind her neck.

“She’s doing great. A little tired, but I think that’s normal.”

“Yeah, I would be tired too if I was growing two babies inside of me,” she declared as she ran a fine-tooth comb through Kennedy’s hair and picked up her shiny silver scissors. Jess wagged her perfectly arched brows as she asked, “Have you met her Hottie Mc Tattooed Tottie soon to be bro in law?”

Kennedy smiled. He was actuallyalreadyher brother-in-law. “I have, yeah.”

Seb had been in town a week now, and unlike the first two days of his arrival, she hadn’t bumped into him, literally, again. She’d seen him around a couple of times, but if she didn’t know any better, she’d swear he was avoiding her.
