Page 29 of Crashing Into You

“I’m just…not feeling well. I was hoping that you could come cover the shop.”

“Absolutely. Give me five minutes.”

“Thanks,” Laura sounded relieved as they disconnected the call.

“I have to go. I’ll Venmo you.” Kennedy said as she stood from the chair and pulled the bib off.

“Is everything okay?” Jess asked.

“Yeah, Laura’s just a little tired. I’m going to go cover the shop.”

As Kennedy made the quick drive to the Snack Shack, she couldn’t help but remember how sexy Seb had looked sitting in the same seat she was in now.

It had taken her a day or two to figure out if she was so hung up on him just because of her obvious attraction to him. She’d never responded to another man the way her body responded to him. But after thinking and overthinking it, she realized it wasn’t just the physical that she’d been attracted to.

Seb was the perfect example of not to judge a book by its cover. On the outside, he had that sexy, edgy bad boy thing happening. He was tall, dark, and tattooed. He had heartbreaker written all over him. Well not all over him, but he did actually have a tattoo of the word heartbreaker on his arm.

But during their drive, she had seen past all that. Seb was thoughtful. He was funny. He was humble and even self-deprecating. He didn’t have an ego the size of Texas. He didn’t think the world revolved around him. He asked questions and actually listened to what her responses were.

It was refreshing. She was basically a professional dater at this point, and she’d never had a conversation flow so easily. Even if he wasn’t attracted to her, or didn’t feel the chemistry she did, she would have thought they could be friends.

So the question remained, why was he ghosting her? She’d been ghosted by quite a few of the men she’d dated. Although, this would be the first time she’d been ghosted before having gone on a date.

As disappointing as it was, Kennedy decided that it was for the best. He’d made it clear Whisper Lake was a temporary stop to recover and rebuild his life. And if anything did happen between them, inevitably, his wings would heal, and he would fly away.

There was no future for them. And as tempting as a hot, summer fling with him would be, she knew that wasn’t the answer. Not only because she wanted more, but if she felt this much for the man after a three-and-a-half-hour car ride with him, then she didn’t want to think about what she might feel about him if anything actually happened between them.

As she pulled up to the Snack Shack, she was more determined than ever not to think about Sebastian Savage. Laura had mentioned that he was going to be in town until after the wedding. So all Kennedy had to do was stay away from him for the next few months and then he would be gone.

The thought of him leaving caused an ache in her chest, which was just one more reason she needed to keep her distance.

“Hello!” Kennedy called out when she walked into the shop and didn’t see Laura.

“Down here,” Laura’s voice came from behind the counter.

Kennedy rushed over to find her friend seated on the floor.

“What’s wrong?! Do you need me to call an ambulance?”

“No, I just got a little dizzy and my back hurts. That’s all.” Laura said as she breathed slowly through her nose.

“Where’s Knox?”

Knox had been glued to Laura’s side the past few months.

“He’s on his way back from the city. A guy he used to serve with had a layover and he went to go have lunch with him. It took mehoursto convince him to go, and I’m not going to call him and tell him about this!”

Kennedy wanted to argue with her friend, but she knew better. Laura was one of, if not the most, stubborn person she knew.

“Okay, what do you need me to do? Do I need to call the doctor?”

“No.” Laura shook her head. “I think I’ve just been overdoing it a little. Or a lot, maybe. I just need to go to bed.”

“Okay, I’ll take you home.”

“I can’t go, yet. I have someone coming to pick up a catering order in a half hour.”

“I’ll come back. Just let me go drop you off.”
