“I wasn’t talking about physically. Have you found someone to talk to out here?”

“No.”

“Are you planning on it?”

No. He wasn’t. After his accident, his mom had pretty much given him an ultimatum that if he didn’t go and see a therapist, she was going to temporarily stay in California. So, he’d gone to see one. Twice. He may have let her believe that he’d had more sessions than that.

“If I need to, I can do Zoom appointments.”

She remained quiet, but Seb knew better than to think that meant she’d dropped the subject. This was simply a strategic retreat. Therapy would be brought up again.

“How’s Reece doing?”

Reece was a model he’d dated on and off for about two years. His mom only knew she existed because she’d shown up and surprised him in California after his second surgery. While she was staying with him, Reece had stopped by to see if he was okay and brought him some dinner from his favorite restaurant.

“She’s great. She just got married.”

“Did she?”

“Yep. I went to her wedding.”

She’d met a movie producer and they’d had a three-month whirlwind courtship. Seb couldn’t be happier for her. She was a sweetheart.

“That’s great!” His mom’s enthusiasm was about as real as vegan cheese. “So Kennedy seems nice.”

He checked the time on his Apple watch. His appointment had taken two hours and they’d grabbed something to eat before heading to the hospital. Which meant it had taken his mom two and a half hours to bring Kennedy up. That had to be some sort of a record for her.

If he was a betting man, he would have put the over/under at thirty minutes.

“She is nice.” Seb made sure to keep his face and tone neutral.

“What does she do, again?” his mom asked as if that was information she already had.

Seb knew for a fact he hadn’t mentioned what she did. He supposed that Laura might have, but he doubted it very much. It was just his mom’s not-so-subtle way of fishing.

“She’s in real estate.”

“Real estate. That’s interesting. Have you ever thought about that?”

“About what?”

“About real estate?”

“What about real estate?”

“I don’t know, investing.”

“Investing?”

“Yeah, I mean as a source of income. You know Knox has bought a few properties and flipped them since he’s been in Whisper Lake. Ford and Keaton helped him. Maybe you should think about that, too. Maybe it’s something Kennedy could help you with and you can do with your brothers and cousin.”

His mom’s remarks immediately transported Seb back to when he was a kid and his mom was worried about him in school because his grades were horrible and he didn’t like sports. She was always nudging him toward things his brothers and cousin were interested in.

Even though he knew that she was doing it because she wanted to help, it still irritated him. “Yeah, maybe.”

“Just something to think about. Might not be a bad idea to diversify.”

Diversify. Right. Because he needed to face the fact that he’d never put ink to skin again.
