“Now you can resume your life as usual. No reason for any follow-up unless you start experiencing any numbness, tingling, or pain.”

Resume his life as usual.

“Do you have any other questions?”

“Um, no.”

“I’ll forward these results to your doctors at Cedars-Sinai.”

“I’m not going back to Los Angeles, so there’s no need to do that.”

Seb walked out of the medical building and felt…numb. He wasn’t sure if it was because he’d resigned himself to a future where he would never pick up his tattoo gun again. Or if it was because he just realized that tattooing wasn’t the most important thing in the world to him anymore.

He could tattoo again. That was great. It was great news. He was happy. But in that moment, he realized something. If he had to choose between a world where he could never tattoo again and a world where he could be with Kennedy, he knew which one he would pick.

There was no question. He’d pick Kennedy. Unfortunately, that decision wasn’t completely up to him. And he hoped he could have both. But just knowing that if he couldn’t which one mattered more, gave him more clarity than ever.

He climbed into his SUV and by the time he pulled out of the parking garage, the console lit up with a phone call. He glanced down, hoping to see Kennedy’s name. Instead, it was his mom.

“Hey, Ma.”

“How did it go?”

His mom had tried to insist on coming with him to the appointment, but he’d refused. He’d been prepared for the outcome to be different, and he hadn’t wanted to hear her trying to convince him to continue therapy.

“Good,” he replied.

“Good?” she repeated.

“Yep,” Seb confirmed.

“Elaborate, please son.”

“The tests all came back at one hundred percent. I have full function and sensation and mobility.”

There was silence on the other end of the line.

“So, wait, does that mean that you can tattoo again?”

“Yes.” And he would. He was going to pull out his equipment as soon as he got home.

“Where are you? We have to celebrate!” she exclaimed.

“We will. Let’s get through the wedding first. I don’t want to take away from Knox’s day.”

“See, emotional intelligence. I told you.”

“That’s just being considerate.”

“To-may-to, to-mah-to.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Seb, wait. Aren’t you happy?”

“Yeah, I am. I’m just driving.” That wasn’t the true reason he wasn’t as enthused as his mom would expect him to be, but she’d definitely buy it as the reason.

“Oh, right. Sorry. I’ll let you go. Love you!”
