Page 90 of Crashing Into You

“Love you, too.”

Seb disconnected the call and almost called Kennedy but he stopped himself for the same reason he hadn’t told her how he felt over the phone. He wanted to do it in person.

Tomorrow was the wedding. He knew he’d be walking her down the aisle.

Tonight, he’d keep himself busy by giving himself a tattoo. He had one space left on the back of his hand and he knew exactly what was going to go there.

“Canyou believe this is actually happening?” Laura’s mom squeezed Kennedy’s hand as they watched Jess do the final touches of her makeup.

“I’m so happy for her,” Kennedy enthused.

Jess was doing all the ladies’ hair and makeup at Laura’s house and Kennedy was happy that she was able to join in the pre-wedding activities. After sleeping sixteen hours a day for the entire week, she was finally feeling more like herself. She’d woken up this morning with no aches and pains and a little pep in her step.

Kennedy hadn’t been to either of Laura’s first marriages, because Laura had moved to Whisper Lake after her second divorce. But she’d seen photos of them. She’d been beautiful in both of the others, but today she looked downright breathtaking.

Motherhood agreed with her. Laura was glowing. She was even back to her pre-pregnancy weight. Apparently, breastfeeding had been the key.

Jackson started fussing so Mrs. Lopez picked him up and started soothing him at the same time Jess got a call and walked outside to take it. When Kennedy looked back at Laura, her friend’s eyes widened and she tilted her head to the side, silently motioning for her to come over there.

Kennedy heeded the bestie bat call and walked over to the makeup chair. “What’s wrong? You look beautiful.”

She assumed this private pow wow must have something to do with Laura not liking her makeup.

There was panic in Laura’s eyes as she whispered. “I don’t know why I’m nervous.”

She knew why her friend was relaying that message to her and not one of her sisters or her mom. It was because Kennedy knew that Laura and Knox were already legally man and wife.

Kennedy crouched down beside her. “It’s just because you want everything to be perfect. And it will be. Chrissy made sure of that.”

Chrissy had made sure every detail, down to the napkins, the flowers, the table runners, the lights, the DJ, the food, the guest parking, and the bridal party, was exactly what Laura wanted.

Laura nodded. “I know, she did. And I know this is just, you know, for show,” she whispered, “but I still feel like I’m going to throw up.”

The last time Laura had felt ill, and had been throwing up, it turned out she was pregnant. “You don’t think…you’re not…?”

It had barely been three months since the twins were born. Surely, they couldn’t have already…

Laura’s eyes widened. “Would you go get me a test?”

“Seriously?” Kennedy asked, still shocked that could even be a possibility.

Laura nodded.

Kennedy started to stand up to go, Laura grabbed her arm, her fingers gripping as she smiled up at her and without moving her lips, relayed, “Don’t tell anyone.”

“I won’t.”

Kennedy casually walked to the other side of the room and grabbed her purse.

“Where are you going?” Laura’s mom asked as she patted Jackson on his back.

“Just have to run home and grab something. I’ll be right back.”

The drive to the drug store was quick since everything in Whisper Lake took less than five minutes to get to. She was in the aisle looking for a test within ten minutes. She grabbed two boxes, just because you can never be too sure.

Her phone buzzed as she headed to the checkout. It was Laura telling her to hurry. She was texting her back that she would when she ran into someone. Her body knew exactly who she’d hit before her mind did.
