“Shh. I’m here.” Zeke pressed soft kisses to the top of my head, holding me against him. “God, I’m sorry. I never want to be the reason you cry.”

“I…thought…you…never…would,” I choked out between sobs.

“Never would what?” he asked.

“I…thought…” I hiccoughed. “I thought you’d never…love me too.”

“Ah, shit, I hate that you felt that way. I’m sorry for giving you reasons to doubt me, Sunny. I’ve handled everything so badly. I was trying to protect you and protect myself and all kinds of other dumb shit. Please forgive me.”

“Will you… say it again?”

He leaned over to gently but firmly kiss my lips. “I love you. More than anything. You’re my sunshine. The light in my darkness. The only thing that’s worthwhile in my life anymore is our family. You and Jeremy. Aunt Meg and my parents. What we’ve found together and the future we’re going to build.”

“I didn’t think you wanted… this. I thought maybe I was just convenient.”

“Fuck no.” His eyes darkened. “You think I’d marry you for convenience? We never even got the pre-nup notarized.”

I grimaced. I’d honestly forgotten all about it. “Oh, no. I’m sorry! We should have—”

“Don’t you see?” He interrupted me with a fierce look on his face. “I don’t care about that. I don’t give a shit about the money. Take it all. Go shopping tomorrow and spend every dime. I couldn’t care less.”

“I love you,” I whispered. They might have been the scariest words I’d ever uttered, but Zeke’s face softened.

“I fucking love hearing that.”

I’d smeared makeup on his shirt and Jeremy was starting to fuss, so I sat up, trying to get my emotions back under control. This was too much and just the right amount, at the same time.

“I was waiting for the perfect time to say the words the first time,” he said after a moment. “But then Carter…” He sighed, looking away. “I still can’t believe he’s gone.”

“I know.” I rested a hand on his thigh, smiling as he held Jeremy up over his head and made silly faces at him to get him to stop fussing.

“Let’s go away,” he said after a moment.

“Now?” I asked. “Where?”

“Tomorrow is busy. We have to be at the reading of Carter’s will and then we have a meeting with Aurora. She doesn’t know it yet, but we’re going to fire her.”

“The band agreed?” I asked in surprise.

“Yup. So, while I’m out, you should pack and book everything for us. I’ll leave you my credit card. Anywhere in the world you want to go.”

“Without Jeremy?” I asked slowly.

“You and I need time alone together. He has two grandparents and a great-aunt who adore him and need a distraction after the last few days. And we need a mini-honeymoon before we take the real one.”

“The real one?” I asked, arching a brow.

“After the real wedding.” He smiled. “How does August sound?”

I frowned. “This August?”

“You want to wait until next August?”

“No, but… can we plan a wedding in two months or so?”

“Money talks, sunshine. So yeah, we can.”

“Okay.”
