“It would piss me off.”

“You know how much I rely on my gut? Well, it’s been screaming that she’s hiding something since day one. And get this—her ex-boyfriend, that she was in her old band with, is none other than Larry Hanks.”

“Oh, fuck.” Mom rarely cursed but that news got a reaction out of her.

“He showed up at the Whiskey gig and made a nuisance of himself, and then he talked to a reporter, insinuating that Devyn was the reason the old band lost their record deal and stuff. There’s more to the story, but that’s the gist.”

“All I can say is, talk to her. Find out whatever it is she’s hiding. There must be a reason for her not to have opened up to you about it. If you can figure out the why, and alleviate whatever that fear is, you’ll open the door to get her to trust you.”

“But how can I do that if I don’t know what it is?”

“Sometimes you have to show the person you love what they need, even if they don’t think so.”

“That’s like psychobabble double-talk,” I muttered.

“Think on it. And we’ll talk again soon.”

“Love you, Mom.”

“Love you too.”

We hung up and I thought about what she’d said.

I had no idea what to do next.

Devyn

Spending the weekend with Jesse was exactly what I hadn’t known I needed. It was hard to find time to see each other, but our friendship was strong. I didn’t have a lot of girlfriends because it was rare to find other women who enjoyed and understood my love of rock and roll. In college, I’d been too focused on Larry and our band to make time for girlfriends other than Jesse, and once I’d moved home, I spent most of my time with Greatty.

I had a few friends from the Junior League, and we occasionally had lunch or attended a book club together, but for the most part, I lived and breathed music. Even working at the studio, I still spend the bulk of my free time writing my own songs. I’d sold a few, which brought in a nice little bit of passive income, and I had so many ideas I wanted to bring to Onyx Knight.

Kingston seemed interested in working on “Symphony of the Broken” with me, and that was something I was really looking forward to.

“You’ve been pensive this weekend,” Jesse commented on our last morning together. We were having brunch at a place near Rockefeller Center and she watched me curiously as she waited for my response.

“This is the first time I’ve been able to breathe since I joined the band. The first time I’ve been away from what Kingston calls the Onyx Knight circus. Even though we played here on Thursday, the rest of the weekend has been chill. And it’s nice.”

“Your life is never going to be chill again,” she said softly, searching my face. “You have to know that, Dev. Especially if you continue to date Kingston.”

“You’re dating Kellan!” I teased.

She fanned herself. “Lordy, that boy rode me hard, put me away wet, and then washed me off and did it all over again.”

We both dissolved into laughter.

“Believe me, I’m familiar with that concept.”

“You think they go to a special school or something?”

“To learn how to be great in bed?” I chuckled. “It’s probably just a numbers game. You sleep with enough people, you learn all the tricks.”

“Have you told him?” she asked in a soft voice.

“How many people I’ve had sex with? God, no. I’m never telling him that number.”

“Do you think it would matter to him? He’s probably slept with more, and you’re okay with it.”
