“I got you out of that jail cell. That means you’re stuck with me now.”

“You keep believing that. I would have found a way out. I don’t need you to rescue me.”

“What is it you need from me?”

“I need you to l—” I cut off my words as I noticed the people behind Damon.

“Sophia, I’m so happy to see you.”

Damon stiffened at the sound of designer Karina Mehta’s greeting. His attention still lay heavily on my face. However, my focus shifted to Karina.

Karina wore an off-the-shoulder dark green jumpsuit with a hint of shimmer. It fit her petite frame as if it kissed all her curves without being too tight, and she’d paired her outfit with a pair of sky-high needlepoint stilettos. The clothes were part of her newest collection.

She completed her look by pulling her jet-black hair into a slicked-back, high-top ponytail, which showed off her long, angular neckline and the chain of emeralds dangling from her ears.

Pushing Damon’s arm down, I wrapped Karina in a hug. “It’s nice to see a friendly face.”

“Ignore all the cattiness. Next week, the gossips will have something new to chatter about.” She turned to Damon, offering him her hand. “I believe we met briefly at my fashion show, Mr. Pierce. Has she worn it for you yet?”

“Worn what?”

He brushed his lips over her knuckles and said, “Not yet. We never seem to get the opportunity.”

“That’s too bad. Sophia’s the reason I’ve had orders for other pieces.”

“As long as no one asks Sophia to model them, I say congratulations.”

I looked between the two. “You bought the sapphire and diamond bikini from Fashion Week?”

His gaze locked with mine, and the intensity made my throat dry. “Only I get the pleasure to see you wearing something like that, My Sophia.”

“Seriously, you’re insane.” I turned my back to him and tucked my arm into Karina’s.

Behind me, he said, “I thought you were the insane one, and I carried the title of the psychopath.”

I ignored him and ascended the stairs with Karina and her entourage.

When we reached the landing of the VIP area, Karina pulled me toward an alcove. “Let’s go over here. I don’t want anyone to overhear our conversation.”

I glanced over my shoulder to see if Damon decided to follow us. Thankfully, a couple who seemed to know him waylaid him into a conversation.

The glare he shot in my direction told me he wasn’t happy I’d left him behind, but I couldn’t have cared less.

Too many eyes were on me, waiting for something to happen. And the whole place buzzed with speculation about me and all the nefarious ways I offed Keith that they were waiting to get a glimpse of anything they could use to spread through all the gossip channels.

Once Karina and I reached a high-top table in a corner, I propped an elbow on the wood and said, “Go ahead, ask.”

“I know you didn’t do it, so don’t insult me by thinking I’d ask such a stupid question.” Her annoyance should have made me feel better about the situation. Still, for some reason, it left an uneasiness churning in my gut.

“What makes you think I didn’t do it?”

“Keith was scared shitless of you. There is no way in hell he would let you within ten feet of him to stab him through the heart.”

“Stabbed him? Is that what everyone thinks happened to him?” I couldn’t hide the surprise from my question, even though I knew I should have.

Who would have put that kind of information out to the public? Especially when the cops said it was poison. Was it all a lie? But for what purpose? There was no way I could overpower someone Keith’s size.

No. No. I couldn’t let my mind jump into an endless loop of questions without answers.
