He returned his hand to his lap, and we sat in a comfortable silence, though it didn’t last long.
He shifted in his seat after a moment, turning to face me directly. His movements were a little stiff, thanks to the recent gunshots. “You do know he’s never going to let you take him home with you?” he said when he had my full attention.
“I believe Grayson would be amenable to the idea.”
He shook his head. “Not him. Amadeo.”
“I don’t think he would care one way or the other.”
“Don’t you?”
“I—” I closed my mouth.
In all honesty, I had no idea. Sexually, we were more compatible than I’d imagined two people could be. But the last time I’d tried to make sense of what it was between us, Amadeo had shut me down. Whatever ‘it’ was, I had a feeling there was still an expiration date. But it didn’t matter; the Ice Queen wouldn’t care.

I sighed. I missed my boxes and blinders terribly.
“Thank you for this, Aurelio,” I said, holding up the folder.
“It was my pleasure,cara mia.”
I stood up, not missing the knowing light in Aurelio’s eyes.
“My lunch break is nearly over,” I explained. I picked up the sandwich I’d left on the bench, though I had no desire for food at the moment.
“Of course, Dr. Dawson,” he said, still smiling. But then the smile disappeared, and he sat up straighter, his expression stern. “Someone will be here to pick you up when your shift is finished.”
I was about to tell him that wasn’t necessary, but although I hadn’t spent a great deal of time with these people, I knew better than to argue.
I started to leave but stopped after a step and turned around.
“Until tomorrow, then?” I asked, praying the bubble of hope in my chest hadn’t worked its way into my voice.
“I’ll look forward to it.”
And I would as well, far more than I should.

My back pressed hard against the passenger side door of Amadeo’s car. His hands gripped my hips, pulling me close, crushing my breasts against the hard planes of his chest. His lips devoured mine like I was the only sustenance that could satisfy him.
