“Did the asshole from the hospital have anything to tell you?” I asked Aurelio. The man was particularly good at making reluctant men talk.

He shook his head. “I would have contacted you if he was of any use. He and his brother—the man the doctor and Raven were working on—had been hired by one of Bianchi’s men—probably his vice president, Owen Thompson, by the description he gave. It was a simple grab job, they were told. They didn’t even know who the target was.”

“You’re certain?” I asked, though it corresponded with the information I got from Thompson before I’d killed him.

Aurelio nodded. “It only took two toenails and a finger, and then he was singing like a canary. Couldn’t shut him up.”

The cabin door swung open and Bruno walked in.

“We’re ready,Signor,” he said.

Thank Christ.“Bene.”

I called for Mario, and stood back, letting my men help Aurelio up off the sofa and across the living room.

“Carmine,” I called when they’d just about reached the open doorway.

“Si, Signor?”

“You’ll protect Aurelio with your life,” I said. Fair, in my opinion, since it was his fuck-up that had gotten Aurelio shot. “If anything happens to him, you might as well use your gun on yourself because it will be a hell of a lot kinder than what I’ll do to you.Capisce?”

“Si, Signor,” he said, nodding while his eyes flickered away with chagrin.

I turned away, dismissing them, and grabbed the broken tracker off the floor.

Now, to move the doctor to a new location.

But I paused halfway to her room. There was one source I could tap for information about Dr. Dawson with minimal trouble.

I pulled out my phone and dialed the number that had called me earlier.

When Raven answered the phone, she sounded breathless; I decided not to inquire why.

“The doctor you work with—Dr. Dawson—what can you tell me about her?” I asked.

Raven scoffed. “The Ice Queen?”

Maybe. I supposed I could see it.

“Dark hair, blue eyes, killer body?” I asked, just to be sure.

“Si. Why?” she responded, her tone suddenly tinged with suspicion.

“She was in the apartment of a real scumbag. Aurelio says she’s the doctor from the ER last night. I’m just trying to learn what I can.” The rest of the details could wait.

“All right, what can I tell you? Well…” Raven paused and the line fell silent. After a moment, she chuckled. “Not much, actually.”

“That isn’t as helpful as you might think.”

“Sorry, cugino. She’s not exactly the chatty sort.”

“You called her the ‘Ice Queen’; why?”

The line went silent again.

“Raven?”

“It’s what most of the staff at the hospital call her. She’s… she takes her job very seriously, that’s all. I like that about her; others, not so much.”
