“Now can you tell me what we are doing?” I asked Rhys.

“Sending Colin some pics from our workout,” he explained as if the answer was obvious.

“I’m not dressed for a workout.”

“Neither am I. Here, let's spray some sweat on you.”

He took a water bottle that he had been holding and started to spray my face. Then he turned to spray his own, and ran his hands through his hair to mess it up a little more than it already was. My mind started off trying to remember if I used waterproof mascara, but it diverted straight back to almost kissing Rhys when I saw the water falling from his cheeks and over his lips. His messy hair was begging me to run my fingers through it, and the smirk he gave me told me he knew exactly what I was thinking.

Cruz kicked a ball and Rhys stopped it between us before Cruz started yelling, “Okay now use the ball and school your faces. Act like this is a hard, and long ass practice.”

“You cannot seriously be thinking of fooling Colin with pictures like this, can you?”

“Trust me,” Rhys said with a tilt to his head. “This is me being nice to Colin.”

“Being dishonest is being nice?”

“He needs to focus on his sister, not your ankle, and not your workouts. But I know he will ask, and I’m going to give him some proof.”

“This is the craziest thing ever,” I sighed, but still thinking he had a point. I absolutely did not want Coach worrying about the team.

“Without moving your feet, pretend you’re trying to beat me one on one.”

I did the best I could, taking a few suggestions from both Rhys and Cruz. The whole process shouldn't have taken that long, but Cruz kept saying something was missing, and snapped more and more pics with Rhys’ phone.

After thirty minutes, Cruz shouted and started backing up farther away from us. “She looks sweaty but not flush. We need pink in her cheeks. I’m going to try from farther away and we can crop your legs out.”

“Did you hear that?” Rhys growled. “You need to be flush. Pink. Maybe red. Needs to look like you just told me I was sexy again, or got mad at me for kicking you with the ball.”

I definitely felt the effects from his words, but it wasn't enough to create the illusion that I had been working out all day. It made me want to smile.

“Don’t make me touch you,” Rhys warned. “Cruz thinks he’s here to help me fuck around with Colin. He has no idea that when I graze your cheek with my fingers you turn that shade he’s wanting to see in you.”

“I can’t just make myself look like that,” I explained, but I was already breathing harder.

“You can imagine me almost kissing you again. How we both knew we needed just one. Picture me leaning down to meet your lips, and how if it wasn't for Cruz we may still be in there now. Tasting each other. Our arms holding onto each other for dear life. Trying to stop ourselves from taking it farther. The attraction we both feel, knowing it can't be any more than just one kiss to curb our—”

“Perfect.” Once again, Cruz was responsible for reminding me how stupid I was as he ran toward us with Rhys’ phone.

Rhys’ words were cut off, but his thoughts carried on, and I could tell from the way he was still looking at me that everything he was saying was true. Not only were they true, but he was just as affected as I was.

“Here,” Cruz handed Rhys his phone. “I gotta go, but this was fun. Fucking with Colin is my favorite past time.”

Rhys smirked and nodded, thanking him, and somehow I was able to give him a proper goodbye with a “nice meeting you”, and “see ya around” tacked on. When we were alone again, Rhys started picking up the water bottle, the ball, and a few other things he had brought to the field.

I barely moved a muscle, but not from my ankle being in pain. It was from my knees feeling weak, and my brain not being able to erase what Rhys had said to me. Would a kiss be enough? Would we have kept going?

When we got back in the locker room, Rhys changed back into this other shirt and used his fingers to tame his hair.

“Colin won’t know about your ankle.” He assured me.

“Good. But I hate lying.”

“You told me you didn’t want him to worry. I’m just going the extra mile.”

“Feels like we are playing him for a fool.”

“It’s just for fun, Ash. Colin isn’t going to be butt hurt if he finds out.”
