Page 62 of Reckless Goals

“I make too much money to risk becoming someone’s baby daddy.” Tripp pushed open the door and left the locker room, but I waited until I heard it click shut before turning on Cruz again.

“Are you after Erin?”

“Maybe,” Cruz winked. “She and I have been discussing hooking up. Just once, of course. That much we agreed on.”

“Yeah, I’ve said that before,” I groaned and grabbed my wallet from my locker. Cruz was giving me just the opening I needed, and I was too fucking weak to not take it. “I’m going with you. Levi’s plane doesn’t land till nine.”

And he’s only coming because I’ve been a pain in the ass again.

Cruz laughed and started walking toward the exit. “You drive.”

Fine by me. I grabbed my keys and jogged to catch up.

“So what’s up?” He asked as we made our way through traffic.

He was vague, but I knew he was asking the same thing Tripp asked earlier. I tapped my fingers on the steering wheel and thought about what I could say that would make sense to someone like Cruz–young, carefree, a father he actually talked to.

“Mel has been calling.”

His eyes widened and he spoke a few words in Spanish under his breath.

“Exactly,” I replied, even though I had no idea what he was saying. “I blocked her number. I feel like a fucking idiot for falling for her in the first place.”

“Did your rebound help with that discovery?”

I hit my hand on the wheel and Cruz barely budged, almost like he was taunting me on purpose. “Ash wasn’t a rebound. Mel was just a mistake.”

“So your fling with Ash is over?”

“Yeah, it has to be.”

Cruz nodded like he understood, then shook his head when another thought popped into his mind. I waited for him to say whatever it was, but he eventually turned the music up and let the conversation go.

And I let him, because there was nothing more to say.

When we got to the stadium, Cruz led me to the side and around to the guest pass entrance. We walked through with a nod from the girl working the gate and straight onto the field where the teams were warming up.

“Did you call ahead?” I wondered.

“I know people,” Cruz nodded toward the center. “They knew I was coming.”

Colin was watching the girls stretch and get ready. Hunter had been moved back to being the assistant coach and was lining balls up in front of the net for the team to strike.

I tried not to zero in on Ash, so my focus stayed on Hunter. I still didn’t care much for him, but he showed me he may not have been the fucked up creep I tagged him as. That didn’t mean I trusted him, but I had a little more respect. Whatever he was going through, I just hoped he learned not to take it out on the team.

“Rhys,” I heard Colin’s voice and tapped Cruz to let him know I was veering off to talk to him. Cruz was already eyeing the team trainer who was prepping her station on the sidelines. He waved me off, not caring where I went so I walked onto the field toward Colin.

So much for Erin.

“Hey,” he smiled knowingly. My own smile fell, worried Hunter had filled him in on how close Ash and I got while he was gone. Then I wanted to kick my own ass for assuming otherwise. Of course he told Colin, that was his job.

“Hey,” I sighed, waiting for him to let me have it and prepared to remind him Ash was an adult.

“Thanks for coming tonight. Big game for us.”

“Yeah, Cruz’s idea. How’s your sister?”

“She’s home now. Justine is still out there helping her, and as soon as the season ends I’ll go back. She has a long road ahead, but in good spirits.”
