Was it possible to have feelings for them both?

When I got to the beach club, my phone started ringing before I could get out of the car, and I saw that it was Hunter. Since I didn't answer the night before, I did that time quickly, so he knew I wouldn't be there.

"Hello?"

"Where are you?" He sounded frustrated. It had only been fifteen minutes since he texted me, so the anger in his voice didn't feel warranted.

"Excuse me?"

"I texted you, but you didn't text me back."

"Hunter, I was driving to the beach. I just pulled into the parking lot when your call came in."

"I'm doing some workouts today," he explained, like it was apparent I had to leave the beach and run to him. "It's been a while since you saw me play. I thought you'd come watch."

"Do I have to remind you we broke up?"

"I'm just asking for some support."

"I hate that it took a breakup to get this much attention from you."

"It's the timing. That's all it is. I've been working hard for this opportunity."

"So the night you were in the club and never called me back, what? You rubbing elbows with the university advisors for that head coaching job? Or was that—"

"I was with Tripp Maddux," he cut me off, making me freeze in silence. "He's a friend of mine. How do you think I got in the camp with the Inferno?"

"Tripp Maddux?"

"Yeah Tay," he softened his tone. "I didn't want to say anything because I wasn't sure it would happen, but it did. And now that everything is righting itself, I could use the support."

"Oh my God."

"Come to the university. Come watch me play for a while."

Shaking my head, I was still too stunned to speak. He couldn't see me, so I knew I had to say something, but my chest felt like it would explode.

"You know Tripp Maddux?"

"Of course I do, we played in League One together, remember?"

No, I didn't. Despite whatever Hunter thought, I didn't pay attention to his League One career. After he left, anything to do with Hunter was too painful, and it was easier for me to live my life without checking in on him. All I knew when he returned was that he held a grudge against the team.

"I'm at the beach," I said quickly, needing to get off the phone. "We can talk later. Have fun today." His voice was still on the line, asking me to wait, but I hung up and made my way out to the cabana, leaving my phone so I didn't have to hear it ringing all day.

I still wasn't sure what it meant, that Hunter and Tripp knew each other, or whether it meant anything at all. It could have been a coincidence, but it didn't feel like that was the case. Regardless, I decided to ask Tripp about it and have him explain the connection before I jumped to any conclusions.

As I got settled in the cabana, I laughed at how crazy it was that we were all connected, but then, as I sat there waiting, my mood changed, and more thoughts ran into my head. Tripp knew Hunter, but did he know that Hunter was the same guy that called me while he was fucking me? Did he know about the ironic connection? And if not, should I tell him the truth?

Tripp

Tatum never messaged me back, so I was going in blind in terms of her being there. After I left her so quickly the night before, I wouldn't blame her if she didn't want to see me. But when I got that text from Hunter, I knew he was watching.

He had started calling me and Tatum at the same time, and it was obvious that he figured out we were together, but the fact that he knew I was walking into her apartment was a whole new level of disturbing. Even going as far as sending the text from an app that hid his phone number, like I wasn't going to know who the fuck it was. I wasn't caving to his demands when I left. I just wanted to try finding his sorry ass.

For an hour, I circled the parking lot and neighborhood, looking for him, but since I didn't know what he drove, it was impossible. He never answered my calls either, but I had to conclude that he was on foot and disappeared when he saw me leave.
