“Will you stop me?” Chris asked, his finger tightening on the trigger. “Because Hayes is right. His plan is good. But only if I know that I’m protected. He believes Jace is the key to that. I need to make sure it’s true before I agree.”

“You’re insane,” I retorted. “You won’t kill him.”

“Chris,” Jace gritted out. “What the fuck?”

“You live for the Disciples,” Chris said calmly. “You’ve always sworn that you’d die for your gang. Here’s your chance.”

Holy shit.He would do it. The pure hatred I had for this man grew even larger as time stood still. Kian was still standing nearly in front of me, and my eyes dropped to his waistband, where I knew he had a gun under his shirt. Nerves ripped through me as I made my next move. Acting rashly was something I rarely did. When I had a plan, it was always thought out. But there wasn’t time for that. Kian jerked when I lifted his shirt, and he attempted to twist away from me. But I already had a hold on the gun when he darted in front of me to obscure my view.

“Rynn,” he warned in a low, frantic voice. “Don’t.”

I didn’t even have a chance to raise the weapon before a shot went off from in front of me.

“No,” I breathed out loud enough for others to hear my panic.

Kian snatched the gun from my hold, but I barely noticed as I peered around him, blowing out a breath to see Jace still standing. Chris had the gun aimed over Jace’s shoulder, and I noticed the bullet hole in the far wall. Chris was staring at me, a smug grin playing on his lips. My chest heaved. I’d fallen for his bluff. I fucked up.

“You care enough to try and shoot me,” Chris murmured before looking at Jace. “You know I’d never kill you. But you did good playing along.”

Jace forced out a chuckle, his face still pale. “Right.”

“I think this will work,” Chris stated thoughtfully. “But you taking my daughter and marrying her off won’t stand, Hayes.”

Hayes scoffed. “All part of the plan.”

“To keep Grimrose in the game,” Chris shot back, a devious note entering his voice. “I believe that Kian needs to stay alive. But I don’t think you’re needed anymore.”

Before anyone could do a thing, Chris swung his gun toward me, aiming it at Hayes, who was beside me.

“No,” Kian roared.

Chris fired the shot, hitting Hayes right in the chest.

Even though it was mere seconds, it felt like slow motion as I stood there in utter shock. Hayes crumpled to the floor while the room erupted in yelling. Kian made a move for his dad before stopping and straightening up, glaring at Chris and then Jace. Jace’s eyes were wide, but he didn’t move, staying near Chris’s side as their men flanked both him and Chris. My heart squeezed painfully as I witnessed Jace and Kian falling back into their roles.

In the last couple of months, their animosity had fizzled away. The friendship wasn’t exactly there, but it had been healing. Chris had just shattered it all by doing this. The peace their gangs had was gone. I glanced at Kian, seeing his eyes darken with rage. Jace pulled out his gun, waiting on Chris’s orders. He might not like his stepdad, but he was still a Disciple, and he’d stand with his gang just like Kian would. The lines were drawn all over again.

Nick began shouting, stepping into the leader role as Hayes lay on the floor, bleeding out. Bullets began flying, and my ears rang, snapping me out of the haze I was in. Gage was back on his feet, fighting with Pratt for control of the gun. I was vulnerable not having a weapon on me, and I scanned the area, looking for a way out. A folding knife was suddenly pressed into my palm, and my eyes flew up to see Kian.

“Go,” he demanded, his voice thick. “Leave, Rynn. Before Chris gets a hold of you. Nick will want you too. He’ll stick with my dad’s plan.”

He didn’t give me a chance to respond, pushing me out of the way when a Disciple tried grabbing me. Kian didn’t hesitate, putting a bullet in the guy’s skull. I flicked the knife open, swinging it when fingers wrapped around my upper arm, jerking me farther away from Kian and the fighting.

“Fuck,” Gage grunted, snatching my wrist just before I buried the blade in his throat. “Come on.”

“We can’t leave them,” I cried out as he dragged me out of the VIP area. He must have gotten Pratt’s gun because he had one in his other hand, shooting anyone who came after us. I looked over my shoulder, unable to see Jace or Kian anymore as everyone fought each other. Others were fleeing, and I heard Nick yell to fall back and leave.

“Yes, we can,” Gage shot back. “This is their war—not yours. I’m getting you out.”

We made it to the dance floor, where it was pure chaos. People were racing toward the exits while others were pulling out their own weapons, wanting to get in on the fighting. Adrenaline was pumping through my body. My ears throbbed from the gunshots and yelling. Pain shot through the side of my body when someone rammed into me, causing Gage to lose his hold on my hand. I slammed into the floor, the back of my head hitting the hard tile. The man was on top of me, and he shot me a vile grin.

“Chris wants you.”

“Go to hell,” I snarled, lifting my arm and stabbing him in the side with my knife. He choked out a breath before he was suddenly lifted off me and thrown to the floor. His blood dripped from my hand as Gage hauled me back to my feet.

He kept me close, leading me toward the back until we rounded a corner to reveal a hallway where there was an exit door at the end. We ran forward, my heart beating unevenly as I thought of Jace and Kian. I wasn’t even sure if they’d get out alive. But Gage had an iron hold on me, as if he knew I was hesitant about leaving. With his free hand, he pushed against the door, letting out a frustrated noise when it didn’t budge.

“It’s fucking locked,” he muttered.
